CD drives are made so cheaply nowadays that it's most likely one of the components in the drive has failed. With the low price of CD drives it's probably best to just put in a new drive.

I Have a Wierd problem and its difficult to explain but in short i cant Burn anything onto a DVD but i can burn on a CD. i didnt use it for a while and dont know why its doing this stupid thing. And when i...

go to " device manager" and expand the dvd/cd rom drives. Select your dvd rom there and right click on it, then uninstall it. Then on top of the device manager options, click on "action" and click on scan for hardware changes. Wait for it to be detected again. You may need to have the driver for your dvd drive (usually its on the cd that came with the drive ) If you don't have then just dowload the driver from the internet.

After replacing my psu (was old and it shorted out) my LG CD-ROM GCR-8523B doesn't work. It has power but the computer doesn't recognize it..?

It is possible that when psu shorted it shorted part of the mother board. Try going into device manager right on the cd-rom in the list and choose search for new hard ware in the drop down menu. If this doesn't work go back into device manager right click the cd-rom and uninstall the cd-rom and reboot the pc. If it does not auto find the cd-rom that way, the mother board is probably messed up. Oh yeah try unplugging the ribbon cable for the cd-rom from the mother board and plug it back in also.

Please rate, and write testimonial if you feel the need to, if this was helpful.

Cd rom

go back to device manager. right click the cd rom name in device manager and click uninstall. right click on an empty area in device manager and click on scan for hardware changes. if this doesnt fix the issue try booting from a windows disk. if you are unable to do this than it may be a physical problem with the device. you may also want to try doing a system restore (if it is win me or higher) by going to start - accessories - system tools - and then system restore. follow the prompts from there.

Cd rom has stopped working. the light is flashing as if it is working but the cd is not spinning.

Check the disk for scratches, and try other disks to make sure the problem is not unique to that one disk. If all disks fail, then double-click on My Computer, then double click on the CD-Rom drive and see if a CD will run. The "autorun" option may have been disabled, which is very noticeable if you've been used to this feature working. To re-enable autorun, right click on the cd-rom drive in My Computer, and go to device properties - recheck the autorun or autoplay option.

If none of the above resolve, then turn off your computer. Open up your computer with screwdriver. Unplug and replug the cd-rom driver. Restart computer. Test cd-rom drive again.

If it still fails, Make sure you are connected to the internet (I am assuming Windows XP - Vista may vary): Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Printers & Other Hardware --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager --> DVD/CD Rom Drives - se if the drive has a yellow exclamation by it - if it does, then right click on the yellow exclamation, and click install drivers - windows will most likely find a solution

If all of the above fails, write back with more details, including model/manufatcurer of cd-rom drive, and model/manufatcurer of computer.

Some CD drives have proprietary drivers but since it worked to install windows, we have a good clue to work with. Check and see if under device manager the IDE channels are working, this means not marked with a yellow exclamation mark. If one or any are, the protected mode drivers are locked. Open regedit and go to this key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CURRENTCONTROLSET > SERVICES > VXD > IOS Click on the NOIDE entry on the right side of the regedit program and hit delete. Close regedit and reboot, this will reset the protected mode drivers. If this doesn't do it, try changing from DMA transfer protocol to P10. It is on the settings page of the CD rom once you get it into device manager. If it's still not working, you may have use DOS mode drivers and that's to complicated to describe here.
