Question about Sony VAIO Notebook
Or you can just disable it in device manager, so you can use it again anytime if you will need it. To do this: If you have Win XP click on DVD drive in device manager and set: Do not use this device(Disable), If you have Win Vista also click on DVD drive in device manager then click on tab Driver and click Disable. DVD drive in this state is disabled and doesn't use power so it doesn't work and doesn't use battery. You can enable it anytime.

You can go into the device manager (right click on my computer/manage/device manager)
Uninstall the dvd drive, when it tries to re install the drive stop it and you should be able to tick a box telling it not to ask to install this device again.
You can always remove the drive, this is usually just 1 or 2 screws under the base and pull it out
