Something most have broke, you will need to take the top cover off and check it over. Maybe this picture will help.

SOURCE: Vacuum Power Switch on Handle Doesn't Work

The switch is very cheap. I have the same vacuum. The solution is to stick a thin peice of cardboard under the slide track for the rod in the handle assembly. You will see the rod when you disassemble the handle for the sweeper. Move the on/off switch on the handle assembly a few times and look at the bottom of the of the assembly to see a thin black rod with cut grooves. This rod activates the on/off switch.

There is a little track that this thin rod of plastic travels along. However over time the the plastic rod begins to recess further into this track. The rod still slides but is now to far away to activate the on/off switch. This isn't very technical but just slide a thin peice of hard paper or cardboard between the rod and the slide track.

Make sure the red on/off switch on the sweeper is set to off. Put the handle back with the switch in the off position. Test the sweeper using the handle a few times before reassembling the screws. This fix may not be permanent according to how you have the paper/cardboard set between the slide track and the rod but it works very nicely.

Hope this helps! : )

SOURCE: Broken Switch on Hoover Windtunnel U6474-900

Hi there SmartAlec from NelsonVacuums.com.au here. I have a U6445 but i suspect there is little difference. Mine has only 2 screws as well and it also was very stiff. After a bit of medium pressure and a twist side to side mine came off.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC35's trigger on/off switch is part of the main body assembly. You can order a replacement main body assembly from www.dyson.com, or by contacting our customer Helplines on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

It may be worth contacting us first before placing an order - if you're having difficulty with your machine we can confirm if a replacement would be covered under our free 2-year parts and labour guarantee.

How do i replace the on off switch on Hoover U6485900

Make sure the power cord is disconnected! There are two sets of three screws one needs to remove. The first set hold the handle assembly to the sweeper body (there are two near the back of assembly and one in front). The second set is inside the cavity that hold the vacuum powered cleaning tool. There are two at the bottom of the cavity and one at the top. Refer to the Assembly Instructions in the Owner's Manual for help. One can then remove the power leads from the on/off switch, push the switch out, and insert a replacement switch. Pay attention to the color of the wires because some switches apparently work with models having 2 black wires (H-28161075), others with a black and yellow wire (H-28161074), and others with connectors to the wires. Reassemble the sweeper reversing the dis-assembly process outlined above.

I have a Hoover windtunnel, model U5470900. The on-off switch is broken. How do I order the parts and what is the instructions for replacing the switch?

I think this is a common problem, as the actual switch is located behind the cleaning tools caddy. The switch is toggled via a long, plastic rod connected to the thumb slider on the handle. It's a comically poor design. I'm not sure, but I think you'd have to replace the entire handle assembly if the slider no longer works. An easier solution is to simply plug the vacuum into a surge protector with an on/off switch.

Hoover windtunnel U6476-910 switch doesn't work

What has worked for me on this vacuum is once the handle is off and the on-off switch is visible, work it back and forth manually.  Mine was very stiff and it did not get any better.   I went to radio shack and bought a spray can of Control/Contact Cleaner and Lubricant. It comes with a small piece of tubing.  I put the tube into the top edge of the switch and pushed the button FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND and then did the bottom edge of the switch.   I worked the switch manually a couple of times.   I repeated the spraying one more time and the rocking.   I put it all back together and has been working fine for me.   This stuff is made for electrical contacts...  HOWEVER, use it very very sparingly!!!  ALSO, a new can has a bit of pressure so watch out that you don't blow some back at you.   JOE

Panasonic Vacuum MC-E450UK

Panasonic MC-E 450UK upright vacuum cleaner.
Just had this problem myself...........easy to get at it when you know how.
Panasonic UK wouldn't help me so I spent some time working it out..........here it is.
Remove the hose from its mounting storage at the rear (called hose clip) where the main body of the vacuum cleaner meets the base of the handle assembly. Remove the screw at the rear of the handle assembly which is behind where the hose 'was' situated and is located inside the deep recess.
Using the soft part of your clenched hand as a hammer, knock the base of the handle assembly at the front and it will slide backwards off the main body of the vacuum cleaner. Don't be scared, give it a thump and keep moving it backwards with a few more knocks.
Next remove the two screws at the front which hold the mains cable and on/off switch cover in place.
Finally looking from the rear once more, lift the plastic 'lug' at the top of the cover and which is part of the cover. This will now allow you to release the cover and pull it forward.
There you go! Told you it was easy!
Watch out for the funny little spring at the front behind the cover in the tiny plastic tube where it connects to the small rubber tubing as it could possibly try to escape.
You now have complete access in order to cut the intermittent part of the cable out and remove it from the 'choc' block.
Happy fixing!!
Jack.

Vax 4100, how to disassemble for repair

To disassemble a canister vax you first remove 2 screws holding the handle cover. One is just above where the power flex enters the handle, the other is at the mid-point of the top, hidden under the label. Both are small crosshead screws. Before doing attempting this, you need to be competent with working on mains electric wiring, as some of this has to be removed to do all this.

Once the handle covers are removed, the next bit is to gently lever off the speed control knob - it's a tight friction fit, then undo the nut holding it to the handle cover panel. After this undo the mains power connections from the multi-block joiner they go into then remove the 2 screws securing the mains wire. Then undo 2 bolts at each end of the handle going downwards into the main body. At this point the handle can be removed as well as the top body plate. You have to fiddle the electrics and switches through the hole in the top body plate to remove it. Now 3 bolts and a small crosshead screw is all that holds the upper motor section to the lower. Remove these and you can separate the 2 halves which gives you acess to the water pump. This is held in by screws founf underneath the plastic ring at the base of the motor body (around where the small reound blue sponge filter goes). This ring is held in by plastic springy clips. Gently lever round it to get it come off.

That's it. Re-assemble is reverse of all this. Don't disconnect the electrics without drawing pictures or photographing to work out which wire goes to where.

How to remove handle from Hoover 5445-900 upright wind tunnel vacuum

Hoover.com doesn't have a manual specific to your model but there is one similar which will show how to remove the upper handle from the body.

http://www.hoover.com/pdfs/manuals/U5467900.pdf

Do you have a replacement switch? If not I believe you can buy one from Hoover (the switch and/or the upper handle assembly). Unfortunately your model isn't listed on the website, is this a new vacuum? I recommend giving them a call, that would be the easiest way.

Also remember when working with electronics to unplug the vacuum. Even when there is no power residual electricity can remain in the wires. If you feel unsure, take it to a repairman.

Hope this helps!
