I bought a new hdd for my old archos 605 wifi, how do i get it to work like a normal archos !!!! i.e. front screen logos!!! movies, music, photo etc, etc

Did you connect a new hdd to it, and if so, how large, and from what manufacturer? Is it not performing the same as it did before if you are using the new hdd? Thanks for asking.

    Hi there

    I connected the new HDD to the Archos, it is a WD 160gb.

    When i turn the Archos on i get the Archos logo screen and then it goes white with a blue line

    across the screen.

    At the top of the white screen it says HDD Recovery 2

    In the blue line you have usb and you can move the line up and down with the Archos buttons

    the other word on the screen says format disk.

    After i format it just goes back to this screen !!!!!

    I have another Archos exactly the same, when you turn it on you get the Archos logo and then

    you get the home screen with all the different options on

    How do i get the new HDD to work the same as my other one (Home screen with all the options)

    I found the manual online:

    I read over the reformat and reset functions:

    troubleshooti ng

    resetting your AR CHOS

    In the event that your ARCHOS freezes or does not respond anymore, try to reset

    it: press the button for 15 seconds (the ARCHOS will shut down completely)

    and turn it on as usual.

    If this does not work, you can also press the “master reset” button as shown below.

    You can use the end of a paper clip to press the button in the hole.

    405 On the left side of the device:

    605 Underneath the device:

    705 At the back of the device, behind

    the battery:

    (see: Replacing the Battery)

    Note: Resetting your ARCHOS will not erase any data from your device.

    However some settings will be reset to their factory defaults.

    system recovery

    If your ARCHOS does not respond correctly, or does not show certain songs or

    videos that you have copied to it, try using the “Repair and Formatting Tools

    (see: System Settings).

    If using the “Repair and Formatting Tools” did not solve your problem, you can

    try a system recovery. It allows you to repair the hard drive, format it, etc.

    Press the button to turn on your device.

    When the built-in LCD screen turns on, immediately press and hold the TV/LCD

    button until the Recovery mode starts (white screen).

    405 605 To move from an option to another, use the up/down Navigation

    buttons. To validate an option, press OK.

    705 Since the system recovery mode is activated, the touchscreen is currently

    disabled. To move from an option to another, press the TV/LCD

    button. To validate an option, press and hold the TV/LCD button until the

    line flashes, and release it.

    The system recovery mode gives you several options:


    cancels the system recovery.

    “Repair Disk”

    attempts to repair the file structure on the hard drive.

    does not erase any data.

    “Format Disk”

    formats the hard drive.

    all data (music, photos, videos, etc.), licenses and settings are erased.

    705 “Force Touchscreen Calibration”

    use this option if the touchscreen does not respond correctly and if you cannot

    access the touchscreen settings (see: Display Settings).

    follow the instructions on the screen.

    I have tried all that and still the screen is saying usb or format!!!

    I even took my other hdd out of my working Archos and put that in and for some reason

    it said the same thing usb, format, my working hdd is full of music and games !!!

    Is the hard other hard drive identical to the 160gb WD drive you bought? or is it smaller?

    Have you tried to transfer the Hitachi 160 gb contents all to the WD 160 gb drive and try, again?

    Are both drives USB external drives or a different interface?

    I did the paper clip and still the same screen!!!!

    A bit more info for you, when my Archos first broke down (months ago) it would only come onto

    the Archos logo screen and if you put the device to your ear you could here the hdd making a low

    pich tone (if you understand that) i was told at the time that it was the hdd and that is why i bought

    another one to replace it!!! maybe something more sinister is wrong ??

    I also read that one shoudn't just pull the usb cable out. That it has to be unmounted first.

    Has the usb cable ever been pulled out when connected to a PC?

    you have to unmount the usb from the Archos itself??

    backup the contents of your hitachi drive to your pc, then reproduce the backup image to your WD drive.

    I think this might work for you, if there isn't something else going wrong with the archos 605 wifi.

    Or, maybe the WD drive is not as compatible as the Hitachi drive as far as the hardware.

    But, I think it should be classified as a mass storage device, and if the data is identical in the two drives, I would think there's a good chance that it might work.

    However, again, I can't make any guarantees since I do not know all of the differences and similarities of the WD vs. Hitachi drives even though they are the same size in GB.

    It says that when the archos is connected via usb to a hard disk drive, to wait until the lights are not flickering and then pull.

    It says that when the archos is connected via usb to a computer, that at the computer end the device must be unmounted before disconnecting.

    Alright? Does that make sense to you?

    I read that there is a 'remove safely' selection under file for the archos being connected to a hdd through usb. (I just read that).

Not playing new tracks loaded onto mp3 from pc

You may have a bad sector on the HDD where those files has been saved. Please check my other fix responses to be able to format your HDD and reinstall the firmware version 2.1 which is the latest one right now. I recommend after the HDD formatted do a disk repaire using Windows. Keep it mind you will lose all the contents and plugins from loaded to the device you need to decide which one is more important saving the Archos or losing the contends. If you be play it safe i'd say send it to archos and have them replace the HDD it costs about 150-170 $ but they will be able to put your plugins back in. and you will have 3 months warrant on their fix.

Web Browser Plug-in Archos 605

There is a seller on ebay (name is luhahaca) that says he is an Archos official Plug-ins reseller. Just search for 605 Plug-ins on ebay. He sells a four pack for only $38.00. I bought and installed them and they work great. Really makes the Archos functional - the way it should come out of the box. Actually, (sadly) the way it does seem to come out of the box - I was disappointed when I received my plug-ins download. All 4 plug-ins = 2kb. Web browser with widgets, extended movie and music capabilities and Real player mode. It seems to me that all of this is already in the Archos, they simply charge extra for a key to access it. It's a shame. Totally worth the price if you have an Archos, but really too bad they feel the need to force their hand into your pocket after you've just given them hundreds of dollars. I think the unit would be reviewed better, and Archos wouldn't look so petty, if these features were just enabled right out of the box. (my opinion anyways)

I cant access my files when I plug my Archos 605 into a computer!

i had the same problem what i did was i downgraded my 605 to
Archos 605 Wifi (20GB-160GB) OS v 2.0.10

then i upgraded to Archos 605 Wifi (20GB-160GB) OS v 2.1.04

Hdd recovery 2 problem

I have the same problem with my Archos 605 Wifi.

I found out that my harddrive was broken. so i replaced it with a new one.

Formatted it, system installed the OS and Media Files.

I downloaded the firmware from the Archos website itself!.

Also this went well. Than i had to confirm with ''done''.

But still i keep cycling through a circle of ''rebooting'' and receiving the ''HDD_Recovery_2'' screen. With the only selectable options:
''USB'' and ''Format''

Please does anyone know the solutions???

Hi everybody i just got off with archos USA tech support there is no other way but to send it in and they wil replace the HDD with a new one. If the archos is not under warranty repair cost is $ 172.50 i think you can buy another one for that price. Although they give you 90 days warranty for their fix.

Playback on TV is in black and white

Only had my device for a few days now and dont actually have the tv dock yet. However I'm gonna assume you have to go into the display settings from archos. Worth taking a look guys!!

Search google for DVD 4 3 once installed drag and drop your dvds (the data files) to the archos if you have the cinema plugin it should all work!

Same issue on my Archos 605 wifi 4GB
The Repair didn't work so here's what I did.
1) connected via USB and got all my Picture, Videos and Music to a safe place.
2) Downloaded firmware update.
fouund it here -

3. Copied update to root of archos drive and rebooted
4. Archoes installed the update and rebooted and came up to desktop again
5. reinstalled plugins (thank god I saved them) copied plug-in to root.
6. Back on the road again
