Question about Motorola DCP-501 Receiver

2 Answers

I have the DCP501 and have previously set up surround sound successfully. A month ago I lost surround sound in Video 1 mode and can't seem to figure out how to get it back. Can u give me step by step detailed instructions on how to set up 5.1 surround in Video 1 mode? Thank You.

Unfortunately that advice didn't help much. The menu system on the DCP501 isn't very user friendly. When I'm in Video 1 mode it is in "analog". I currenlty have VCR 1 mode in Optical 1 mode but am unable to get surround sound. I am currently on a channel that offers 5.1 surround but the sound is only coming out of the center channel. All connections from speaker to receiver are fine. I honestly believe I need to get to figure out how to get to the surround sound setting and select "Yes" but I can't seem to get there. Help!

Are you viewing the menu display on your TV? Start by pushing the little white "setup" button on your RC, and it's all intuitive from there.

You must select various input sources from the INPUT SETUP menu so the DCP501 knows which digital inputs are assigned. The DCP501 display shows the current audio input used by the selected source: OPT 1 , OPT 2 , COAX , or AN ALOG. For digital audio inputs only, the DCP501 turns on an icon to distinguish the digital input type: PCM, D T S , or D D I G IT AL . This option defines whether a subwoofer speaker is connected to the AUDIO-PREOUT-SUB connector. If NO is selected, Speaker Size for all speakers defaults to L A RGE. If you do not have a surround mode selected, you cannot make adjustments to the rear speakers. Similarly, if you do have a center speaker in the selected mode, you cannot make adjustments to the center speaker. You must set the DCP501 to an audio mode that uses the center channel and/or the surround channels in order to make adjustments to the center speaker and/or surround speakers. The factory setting is YE S . A 5.1 surround system has five discrete audio channels: Left, Right, Center, Left Surround, Right Surround and the Subwoofer.

  • Front Left & Right Speakers (L & R): Place the Front Left and Right speakers at ear height, producing a 45° angle as viewed from the main seating position. This delivers a wide sound stage and precise localization of individual sounds.
  • Center Channel Speaker (C): Place the Center channel speaker either above or below the TV. Then, aim the speaker either up or down to point directly at the listener. If you have a perforated projection screen, center this speaker both horizontally and vertically behind the screen.
  • Surround Left & Right Speakers (SL & SR): Place the SL & SR speakers between 90° to 110° to each side and 2 feet or higher above the listener.
  • Subwoofer (Sub): If you have two Subs, put them in the middle of opposing walls. If you have one, place it in the middle of the front wall.
  • Go to the settings mode of your tv from menu and in that select the video mode and in that select sound settings. If its turned off select on.If its selected mute then select Unmute.------------
  • Thanks.

To set the surround sound in video 1 mode, go to the main menu on your channel receiver, select the audio set up, the default settings are then displayed, you select the surround sound in the video 1 mode.

Also you have to select the video mode first, by selecting the video 1 mode.

Take care

From a glance into the manual, it shows it is quite uneasy to get that done. Let me take you through a step by step means to get the surround sound working.

From any of the mode you want to set the surround sound on,

Select MENU and press SELECT or OK,
Select the speaker SETUP and press OK,
Press the SURROUND SETUP and press SELECT or OK,
Press SELECT or OK and the currently selected setting flashes. In this example, SMALL
Press CURSOR left/right (< >) to display LARGE, SMALL, or NONE.
Press SELECT or OK to accept your selection and LARGE, SMALL, or NONE stops flashing.
Press down arrow (∨) to select the DISTANCE,
Press SELECT or OK and the currently selected setting flashes. for example, 1 0 f t flashes.
Press CURSOR left/right (< >) to adjust the distance from your listening position to the
    surround sound speakers.
The surround speaker cannot be further away than the front speaker.
Press SELECT or OK to accept your selection and the selected value stops flashing.
Press down arrow (∨). to Go back to MENU and Press SELECT or OK.

To reset the speakers back to factory setting,

SPEAKER RESET: Press down arrow (∨). The Speaker Reset option allows you to return all
speaker settings to their factory default values.

    Take care

I have no sound coming from surround speakers and sub.

Some surround modes switch speakers on or off as required. It's possible that the inputs you are using have settings that remember your previous settings, ie: no sub and surround speakers. Check the inputs and also make certain that whatever is connected to them is putting out Dolby signals.

No Sound on a Motorola DCP-501

You don't say what else works. Have you tried it with FM to eliminate external source causes? Does your TV get audio passed through to it? That would establish that there is program material to be amplified. Headphones work?

The following is from the User Guide -

Check to make sure that each speaker has been properly connected to the
speaker output jacks on the rear panel of the DCP501.
Check that the speakers are working by utilizing the Test Tone function as
described in the “Operation” section.
Verify that the DCP501 has not been placed in MUTE mode.
Check that the volume control on the DCP501 has been adjusted to an
appropriate listening volume.
Verify that the DCP501 is set to the correct source (CATV, VCR, DVD, Tape,
 If the front panel displays O V E R L O A D , one of two things has happened:
1 If the DCP501 detects the speakers have a short circuit, it shuts down
the amplifiers. Switch the DCP501 off, remove the short circuit, and turn
the DCP501 back on. The DCP501 should now work as normal. If
O V E R L O A D is still displayed, a short circuit condition remains.
2 If the maximum amplifier output power is exceeded, the DCP501 shuts
down the amplifiers. Turn down the volume a little and switch the
DCP501 off and then switch the DCP501 back on and the DCP501
should now work as normal. If O V E R L O A D is still displayed, turn the
volume down some more.

The Speaker Setup menu has a Speaker Reset (to default settings) option.

1 front speaker and 1 surround speaker won't work on cable selection

theres probably a problem with the right channel cable or plug that connects the tv to the reciever, or the tv is set to mono audio.

Setting up receive set top box and tv for surround sound

Plug the TV to an open channel on your receiver via this output:
*Rear, 1 x Digital audio output (coaxial) ( TOSLINK )
This will look like a single RCA output plug.
Set that input channel on your receiver to some sort of virtual surround mode because it doesn't look like your HDTV has a decoder in it (meaning it will come out stereo and the receiver will have to fake it).
Turn the volume all the way down on the TV and use the receiver to control TV volume just as you do with DVDs.

*Substitute this with the digital audio output on your set top box if you are sending video only to the TV from the set top box (component, DVI or s-video connections). So video goes to the TV, audio to the receiver.

Surround sound not working properly

Hi guys,

Make sure that your sound aka dvd or whatever is set for a DTS (5.1) set your dvd at bitstreem and your receiver to automatic detection. When your movie will start you will heard your Receiver Relay//Mosfet clicking and a Red led will say DTS once you get there you will be able to select your Doldy digital surround the real one.

Ps: if you want to reset your VR-309 to default HOLD the POWER button for 5 sec unplug it from the wall hold it for 5sec while unplugged and replug it will be rested to default.
