Appreciate the help... before I got your feedback I pulled the box out in anticipation of having to replace it (it is 9 yrs old) and decided to do like my dad used to do to the tv when reception got fuzzy, and slapped the back. The compressor started working so now I'm in a watch mode. I"m assuming that this means the contacts in the relay were stuck like you've suggested. I'll capture what you've sent though and use it if it quits again. If you have further feedback I'd appreciate anything you have to offer based on this latest. Thanks, John Madden

I have a similar problem with a Whirlpool model ed25rfxfw01. It just suddenly quit cooling, although all electrical functions seem to be working. Unfortunately I'm still hearing what sounds like relay clicks from tempurature cycling. I think this may be a bad sign indicating a compressor problem. My only hope (and question) is: why would this happen so suddenly? Could this indicate an open winding rather than a refrigerant leakage? This is a 25.2 cu ft model.

If the fan in the freezer is running go to the compressor and see if you have 120 volts ac to the compressor relay, normally a white and red wire will be connected to the relay,
if you have 120 volts to the relay, remove the relay and if it is white shake it if you hear a rattle in the relay it has a set of burnt contacts in it and will have to be replaced if you have 120 to the relay and no rattle in the relay then a compressor problem

if no 120 to the relay check the cold control, the defrost timer

I WOULD CHECK THE COMPRESSOR RELAY FIRST

I have this refrigerator and it suddenly stopped cooling...frozen food thawed, refrigerated area warm but we still have power. I was wondering if it was a thermostat problem. Not sure if it's worth fixing...any ideas???

Frig freezer wont get cold enough after move . 35 degress then back up to 45 . cleaned everything good . coils everything . worked fine till moved . waited 24 hours after move to plugg in . help

Hi Kim, Before you check out the link below, Read about your refrigerator not cooling? Is your older or newer model refrigerator plugged in, getting power, the lights are on inside but the fridge will not cool and the freezer won't freeze? If your refrigerator or freezer has suddenly stopped cooling and the freezer won't freeze, we have multiple solutions for you.If you hear a clicking sound coming from the back of your refrigerator/freezer, then the problem is most likely the compressor is overheating or not getting proper power and will not start. The compressor is the component on your refrigerator that allows your refrigerator to cool. If this component is not working properly your refrigerator will stop cooling. Most of the time the compressor is not the component that has failed.

My whirlpool frig stopped cooling, the condenser coils where really covered with dust and I cleaned them but the frig still does not cool. What should I look for next?

If the refrigerator isn't cool, you need to answer some questions, then see if the compressor is running.

First, answer these questions: Is the refrigerator completely dead? If so, see “It's stopped completely.” Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If not, reset it.

Next, see if the compressor motor is running The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help. If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:
  • The compressor
  • The Thermostat
  • The overload, relay, or capacitor
  • The defrost timer
  • The condenser fan motor

Whirlpool gold side by side refrigerator relay compressor?

turn it off for an hour or so and give the coils time to thaw just in case they somehow froze up. also if the frig was tilted in the wrong direction (which it doesnt sound like it was since it has food in it!!!) it could need time to let the refrigerant and oil settle back into the compressor.

where are you located (cold or warm climate)?
and where is the frig located (in your home)?
