Sounds like the drive has seized spindle... Not good news.
Is it buzzing similar to any of these noises: ?
What you should do is remove the internal drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer. If still buzzing then it's a real mechanical problem...

Try rebooting the computer first with the drive not connected to it.
After the computer reboots, make sure the accomdata is turned off then connect the usb cable. Then turn it on and you should get the password dialog box and be able to access it.

OK, 2 things to check. First and foremost, when you plug it into the PC does it make that nifty noise to let you know it sees a new piece of hardware?

Second, if it does, you probably need to initialize the disk. Hit the windows button, right click on computer, and select manage. Under the storage category highlight Disk management. If you see the drive there, you can right click and select initialize, or format. From there the system should see the drive.

Where are locate the air filter for 2003 ford focus 2.3

When you look at your engine you should see a black plastic or rubber hose that runs from the air filter enclosure up to you air intake. The plastic hose should be around 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Be sure not to mistake this for one of the radiator hoses. After you locate the filter enclosure there should be 3 or 4 latches or screws that you will have to undo. After you either unclasp the claps or unscrew the screws which ever your specific car has the enclosure should pull apart exposing your air filter. I hope this helps.

The computer does not see MyBook anymore

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the MyBook on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

My computer has always recognized my 250 GB Simpletech external drive, but now it won't. The red light shows on the hard drive when I plug it into the USB Port but nothing else happens. I search under My...

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

My WD external drive is plugged in, and my computer keeps saying that one of the usb devices has malfunction and is not being recognized. I have very important data on this drive. How can I fix this...

The problem may not be with the hard drive itself but with the interface between the drive and the USB port. The drives in most cases are fine if they have not been dropped or abused. The problem with external drives is usually the small circuit board that contains the sata to usb interface. Try purchasing another external hard drive enclosure and remove the drive from the enclosure you now have. There are guides on youtube to show you how to take one of those WD enclosures apart. Just install the hard drive in the new enclosure and load the driver files that come with the new enclosure. You should have a working external long as the hard drive has not failed.

Computer does not find ext drive it always has in the past I tried it on other PC and still no Help

There are two possibilities: the drive is bad or the enclosure has lost a connection. First try a new data cable (if you didn't do this when you tried it on the other computer).
Next, if you are willing to do this, take apart the enclosure and check for any loose or damaged wires in the enclosure. To check if the drive is good, check the specs on the drive (IDE/SATA), you can use a different enclosure (match the size and internal connection) or a USB/IDE/SATA adapter. With the drive connected to the computer with a different device, see if you can access the drive.

For most external drives, taking apart the enclosure to access the drive may void the warranty. However, a warranty replacement will not include data recovery.

Good luck.

Lights flash on the front for split seconds

Take the drive to your local PC shop(or go grab a spare enclosure and D-I-Y), ask the techs there to pull the hard drive out of your phantom and test it in a new enclosure. If it works there, buy the enclosure, if it doesn't reply back and let me kow your Country, State and City and I can recommend a pro to look at the actual harddrive if you need files recovered from it.

Hope this helps FixYa

Computer external hard drive problem

If the hard drive still spins, then the data can be saved. If there is a near by computer store, explain your problem, and they can take apart the drive and probably but the data on a new drive for you. If you want to try this yourself, you will need to take apart the outer enclosure of the Lacie drive. Then unplug the hard drive, and either put it in another similar enclosure (requires taking that one apart too) or buying a new enclosure.

My pc cannot detect my external hard drive

Could be the enclosure electronics or the drive itself. Most of these are plastic enclosures with a seam all the way around. Use something sharp like a paring knife to get in the seam and pry it apart. That would allow you to extract the drive and try it in a new enclosure of the same type and size. If it turns out to be the drive, you can put a new drive in your new enclosure.

Failing hard drive

Hey Glennlamp,

If it is just starting to fail, you can certainly salvage as much as you can before complete failure. Is it still recognized by the computer, copy as much data off as possible. If it is not recognized (already failed) you may have a bad enclosure. If the enclosure is bad, perhaps you can take it apart and hook up the drive as a slave in your computer. This will truly tell you if the drive is going bad or it was the enclosure. If the drive truly is bad, your only recourse is to send it in to get the data recovered by a data recovery company (plan on spending at least $300-$1000).
