Question about Dell 942 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

I have gone through all of the suggested fixes for the lack of communication between my computer and printer. I have unplugged and plugged, uninstalled and installed, used windows mr fixit, established the correct port, everything on my dell computer says my printer is ready and everything on my printer seems to be functioning. When I attempt to print, I get a message "something went wrong when trying to print."

Hello, Jeff.

Three suggestions come to mind:

1. Be certain that the Dell printer is set as your default in Printers and Faxes.
2. With all the troubleshooting you mentioned (and we at FixYa appreciate all the details !), the only other suggestion (if my suggestion #1 is not the solution) is to replace the USB cable or move to another USB port.
3. Try to set up on another computer if all else fails.

Hope these suggestions help.

I will try connecting the printer to another computer

Another suggestion ... although it would be unusual, your Firewall or AV software could be interfering. Disable those software and try again.

Did the printer ever work or did it just stop printing ? If it just stopped printing, had you downloaded or installed any software or hardware prior ?

Any conflicts (yellow "?" or "!") in Device Manager ??

  • jeffshowalte Jul 11, 2010

I connected to another computer and it prints fine.

  • jeffshowalte Jul 11, 2010

It worked fine until I had a virus on the laptop. I got help in cleaning out the virus but then the printer would not work. I have checked the firewall settings and the printer is not blocked.

  • NinaE Jul 11, 2010

Again, good information. Since your printer and cable check out OK and you had a virus after which your printer wouldn't work, the only conclusion is an operating system problem, caused by the virus, which prevents the printer from working correctly.

My suggestion is to go to System Restore and choose a date when your system worked OK. Note: with System Restore, everything, including your documents and other files you saved on the hard drive, will roll back to that date. So, copy your necessary documents to a flash drive, etc. first, before you use System Restore.

    Any suggestions?

    Jeff,

I wonder if you didn't get my last email regarding System Restore. Please note that you may need to go back and try several dates. Here's my info, again:

I am having a little difficulty with the restoration but will keep trying to get back to a date before the virus.

Printer and computer not communicating

It could be a number of things. Here's a few to check:
1. Make sure the drivers are up to date for your printer. (Google (your printers model number) drivers.)
2. The cable that connects your printer to the computer could be bad/damaged/unplugged. If so it should be replaced/plugged in. (I'f intact then I'd also suggest unplugging it and plugging it back in.)
3. Could even be the printer itself depending on the age of it.

If none of those work, reply back with the Model and Brand and we'll try again to assist you.

Not communicating with computer

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect the printer from your computer. Reboot your pc. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer. Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the USB connection.

If that doesn't help, try the steps below:

1. Disconnect the printer from your computer.

2. Re-brick your printer. Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds.

2. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.

3. Delete the Lexmark print object.

4. Reboot your pc.

5. When your pc turns on, reconnect the printer.

6. Wait until your pc fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the list, then try to print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed.

Each time i push print i get a message back that say's printer can not communicate with computer. how can i fix it.

First try to restart the computer.
If this does not work power the computer down then unplug your printer from the computer.
Unplug your printer from the wall and wait 1 minute then plug it back in.
Turn your computer back on and after it is finished "booting up" plug your printer back in.

No communications computer to printer

With the Lexmark printers communication subsystem you MUST let the driver ask for you to plug in the printer. DO NOT plug the printer into the USB port until told to do so.

To fix a fouled install:
(1) Uninstall the Lexmark drivers in Add Remove Programs
(2) Shutdown the computer
(3) Disconnect the printer from the USB port
(4) Restart the computer
(5) Run the Driver Installation software
(6) Cancel ALL attempts by windows to auto install the printer
(7) When the software asks for the printer connect it and continue

Printer will not communicate with the computer. I keep getting a note saying to check all connections which I hav done.

Try doing this (assuming Windows OS):
  1. From Control Panel > Priinters, remove all printers.
  2. Unplug USB cable to printer and reboot.
  3. Install software for printer. I would suggest using the newest drivers from the manufatures site. I would have given a link if I could, but you didn't post a make or model number.
  4. Plug USB cable back in.
Hope that fixed ya...
