Question about Sherwood RX-5502 Receiver

1 Answer

Sherwood receiver automatically going to standby

I have a Sherwood RX5502 brand new. It was installed by a dealer. When I turn up the volume on the receiver or when I add rooms to the receiver it goes to standby from AUX input. I think it may be getting hot and kicking out as a safety. Does this unit have a cooling fan? If so I do not hear mine running. I do not know what the total wattge is on the entire system but I am guessing that possibly the wattage required to run the speakers is more that the unit will output (causing an overload) and subsequent kickout into standby. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. My confidence in my dealer and device is at an alltime low or I would call him with this problem.

You might have a point there as far as it switching to Standby from AUX input.

Are any fuses, if there are any, blowing?

Caution regarding installation
Note : For heat dispersal, do not install this unit in a confined space such as a bookcase or similar enclosure.
:CAUTION
WARNING
Do not block ventilation openings or stack other equipment on the top.

I did not read that any cooling fan exists on this unit, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

The unit consumes the following:

• Power consumption ........................................................................................................................................ 3.3 A

if P=VI then Power = 110V*3.3A= 363 Watts of power output

My sherwood rx 4109 has no sound what do i do

Pull the sherwood power cord from the wall for 20 minutes. On the back of sherwood, check all cables and make sure they are in the correct places. Check speaker wires and make sure they are connected. 1)After 20 minutes, turn power on to sherwood. 2) select an input (radio, cd, etc.) 3) Push play. 4) Turn volume to desired level.

Is it worth repairing a sherwood model 6030R Receiver and can you even get new parts for it???

Given that the Sherwood is a basic stereo/Dolby Pro Logic receiver, and that we have had sources where digital audio (coax and optical) are the standard for Dolby Digital and DTS for well over 15 years, and that HDMI is established now as the de facto standard for AV connections on many home AV products.... perhaps it's time to retire the Sherwood and look for something new.

Entry level price points for new, fully spec'd, AV receivers capable of dealing with HD audio, DD, DTS, Dolby ProLogiic- and ProLogic II have never been cheaper.

Sherwood is still a good brand. It has been joined by Yamaha ( RX-V377BL); Sony (STRDH750); Denon (AVR-S500BT) and Pioneer (VSX-524-K) at the entry-level price point of $249. In real terms these are probably a fraction of what you paid for the Sherwood all those years ago.
Another option is used equipment. There are some really good pre-HDMI AV receivers from Denon, Yahama and Pioneer available in the used market.

Cables between sources and compatible units rarely need to be physically modified.

Splicing headphone outputs designed for nominal 8-ohm impedance speakers to a 47K-ohm (typical) RCA load is not a good idea but it might work on the Sherwood because this receiver does not automatically silence your other speakers when the headphone jack is installed.

There is NO other volume-controlled output to choose. Try it.

How do I reset the defaults on my Sherwood RD-8108 AV receiver?

I just got a tip from Sherwood tech support on resetting my Sherwood receiver, and it solved my problem perfectly. It's not the same model number but here's what I did: Put the receiver on Standby. Press and hold the Setup button for 3 seconds. When you see the model # on the display, press Enter. The word "Cleared" should show on the display. Hope it works for you also.

Keeps turning itself off

If Both speakers are working at a low volume and you turn it up and it clips and shuts off you have one of 3 problems. you have over driven your speakers and one has shorted the voice coil but still will work at low volume, its a overload protection for ohms short in receiver. unhook each speaker and turn balance to the one hooked up and turn up receiver if it shuts off do the same with other speaker to determine which side is bad. 2 speaker wires are touching at speaker or receiver. 3 a bad receiver output transister. Good luck.
