No display nor will it shoot

I had err99 on my 450d so I took the lens off and took the battery out for a little while and put them back. Now, err 99 has disappeared but there is no display when I switch it on and it won't take a picture :o(

Err 99 shooting is not possible i have changed the battery pack installed a new lens also removed the cf card but still the err is coming wot should i do

Welcome to Fixya
Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....

Here's what you can try:
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Thanks

Rebel XS ERR99

This is something I found when googling your problem.

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I'm sorry to hear that
your EOS 10D is displaying an "ERR 99" message.

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the
following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.

Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If it does, then the camera should
be serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of
steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.

Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.

If the "ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the "ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

Err 99 appears after every click for canon eos 30 D

Err 99, but lens-to-body problems are common- thought error 99 is a bit of a catch all- generally a lens and body conflict. And also Err 99 means that something wrong happened, but then it cleared out before it could be further determined.
Here is the blurb from canon to try:

ERR 99

Err 99 usually means your lens contacts are dirty either on the lens itself or on the camera.

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

Canon EOS 400D SLR - Err 99

Try going into the menu and turning off the lock for shooting without a lens. Then try firing it without a lens to see if it works. Very often a lens problem can cause the Err 99 message.

Also, check to make sure the pop-up flash is not stuck down. That could also cause it.

Unless you have used your camera a LOT, it shouldn't be a bad shutter. They usually only quit after many years of use. I think Canon quotes 125,000 shots as the normal life of a shutter in a digital SLR.

Canon 450D Brand new, just got it out of the box and I keep getting Err 99 when I try to shoot. Haven't managed to take any photos yet. I tried 2 different memory cards, cleaned the small gold connector...

Its a common Error on these kind of cameras, I have never heard of someone who had it so fast. You can try do some adjustments but your best way to fix it is to send it back to Canon, since its brand new.

Here are some thread with information about the err 99:

Err 99

cleaning the contacts ought to be done using a pencil eraser(i am very specific about this)to fix this error
vigorously scrub the lens contacts with an eraser. Then  gently use the eraser to clean the camera contacts (holding the contacts face-down to prevent eraser rubber from falling into the body).Put the lens back on… and the camera shoudl be fixed!
Try this and post back before you rate..
