Taskbar Question: Simple question that i cant figure out. At the very bottom of XP, there is (as you know), a taskbar, with a Green "Start"...How do you move it to another location, on the desktop? I had a freind that incidentally moved hers, and i cant figure how to get it back to the bottom.

Easy
Right click the taskbar, if there is an option to lock the taskbar, make sure it is unchecked. Once unlocked, put the mouse pointer on a blank portion of the taskbar press and HOLD the Left mouse button, MOVE the mouse pointer to the center of the screen then to the side of the screen you want the taskbar to reside. Then right click and lock it again.

Try increasing the height of your bottom taskbar by placing your cursor somewhere near the middle until the double-arrowheads appear; then drag the arrows upward to increase the rows on your taskbar.

1 Answer

Windows start bar has completely gone

Sympton

You cannot see the taskbar (which contains the "Start" button) anywhere on your desktop.

Causes

  1. The taskbar may be hiding at the bottom of the screen after being accidentally resized.

  2. If the presentation display was changed, the taskbar may have moved off of the visible screen (Windows 7 and Vista only).

  3. The taskbar may be set to "Auto-hide" (Windows XP with Service Pack 2 only).

Solutions

  1. Put the mouse pointer on the bottom border of your screen.

    • If the pointer turns into a double-arrow doublearrow.gif, click and drag upwards.
    • If your taskbar isn't hiding at the bottom of the screen, try moving the mouse to the right, left, and top edges, looking for the double-arrow.

  2. Press the Windows logo key and the P key on your keyboard to bring up the presentation display mode options.

    • Make sure "Computer Only" is selected.
    • Use the arrow keys to toggle between options and Enter to select the correct display mode.

  3. Press the Windows key on the keyboard to bring up the Start Menu

    • Right-Click on the taskbar and select Properties.
    • Toggle the 'Auto-Hide the taskbar' checkbox and click Apply.
    • If it is now checked, move the cursor to the bottom, right, left, or top of the screen and the taskbar should re-appear.
    • Repeat step three to return to your original setting.

The taskbar is upside down and at the top of the screen

On Windows computers, you should have what is known as the taskbar. This is the gray strip that runs across the bottom of your computer and which displays icons for quickly accessing programs you frequently use. The taskbar also shows the "Start" menu, clock and icons for your Internet connections. Sometimes icons do not appear properly in the taskbar. This usually is because the computer is new and hasn't had icons placed in the taskbar manually, or because a default setting is off in the OS properties. Both are simple fixes.

1.Right-click the "Start" icon and select "Properties."

2.Select the "Taskbar" tab in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialogue box.

3.Uncheck "Lock the taskbar" and "Auto-hide the taskbar." Check "Show Quick Launch." Since the Quick Launch box isn't available in some systems, you may need to right-click on the taskbar area, choose "Toolbars" and then select "Quick Launch."

4.Navigate to the programs you want to show on the taskbar through the "Start" menu or on your desktop. Right-click the program and drag it to the taskbar. Choose "Create shortcuts here" from the menu that appears. The icon for the program should appear in the taskbar.

My whole taskbar is not visible

If you move the mouse pointer to the very bottom of the screen, the taskbar should pop up as it does when you press the Windows Button, but without Start. If you want to keep it up, right click on the taskbar and select "Properties" In the new window, "Unselect" "Autohide" and the taskbar will stay up.
