Question about Intex Automatic Salt Water System for Above Ground Saltwater Pool

2 Answers

Our system continues to give a 90 code reading even though we have a big enough filter pump to push enough water through the system. Everything is tight and the system is clean. how do we correct this problem? System is brand new.

Code 90 indicates that the water flow rate is not high enough for the system to operate properly. This is measured by a white plastic piece hinged from the top of the pipe. As water flows by the plastic piece gets pushed back and up against the top of the pipe so that it touches a sensor. A couple of solutions are as follows or a combination of these:
1) make sure that all pipes and filters are clean and clear. Leaves or other stuff will slow the water flow.
2) check that the clorinator is clear of any blockage or dirt.
3) unscrew the flow meter and pull out to check that the hinge is clean and the plastic piece moves freely.
4) when you put the flow meter back in place try turning it ever so slightly which might make a difference. This has worked sometimes for me.
5) make sure that the clorinator is level. I tilted my unit so that the inlet side is slightly higher than the outlet as an experiment and this works as well since I was trying to get the flow valve to travel less distance.(it's a geometry issue)
6) make sure there is no air stuck in the lines. Try lifting the pipes/tubes to move air out and make sure you bleed your pump to ensure that it is full of water and there is no air trapped here that would reduce flow.
7) try taking any nozzle off the hose going into the pool. These may slow the flow coming into the pool and cause back pressure in the pipes.
8) I have a solar panel with a bypass valve. The clorinator only works when I run the water using the bypass valve so that no water runs through the solar panel. Try running all water only through clorinator with no other devices in line to slow the flow or produce any restrictions.
9) Try running the clorinator but take out the pump filter as an experiment. The filter may need replacing. Taking the filter out should tell you if this is the case if the clorinator works without the filter in place.
10) As a last resort check the flow rate requirements for the clorinator and on the pump you have. The pump may be undersized.

Check the manual for code 90's. there are about 8 different solutions that they recommend--most are all over the board. If that doesn't work, it sounds like something else is wrong mechanically.

Check that the flow sensor is in the right position. There is only one way it should go and snap in its fitting. Unplug it from the wire harness and check for any signs of corrosion. The salt water may have gotten up inside and shorted the contacts out. Easy part to replace from Intex for about 14$.

Certainly sounds like a filter problem. Here's a couple of things to try.#1. i don't know how you cleaned the filters but clean them again with a good filter cleaner/degreaser.#2. After a good cleaning, get a bucket large enough to hold the filter fingers in and give them an acid bath. They recommend a 20 to 1 ratio of water to acid (muriatic) but I personally don' think thats strong enough. Use a good amount of acid and let the fingers soak for a good ten or fifteen minutes. (always add acid to water, not water to acid) Rinse and reassemble filter. If that does'nt solve problem, I think it's time to replace filter.

You've gotta keep that annoying filter pretty darn clean to please the saltwater pump. I have to scrub my filters daily for this reason. What pump do you have? Mine is rated for 4000gph but I see Intex even offers support for pumps with as little as 500gph.

Low flow code 90

hello first try bleeding the system.
Unscrew the cap above the cartridge just enough so water and air come out. Continue to run the pump for a few minutes to help air escape then close the valve.
If this does not work then take the electro cell apart and spray a hard jet of water over the flow sensor and even soak it in vinegar if there is a lot of calcium buil up on it.

Put it back together and follow the top directions again.

Also it wouldnt hurt to clean your filter cartridge I clean mine every day better yet get a second one. A dry filter to start works better than spraying one and putting it back in. So while you put in a dry one and use it the second one is drying and ready for use the next day.

Brand new system... Code 90... Checked for air in hoses & loose hoses, changed pump filter, everything installed correctly... Help????

Make sure your flow sensor moves freely. Soak the unit in vinegar if it looks dirty
I would also try bleeding the system run your pump with the bleeder screw on top of the filter cartridge open a few turns Just enough to allow the water and air to flow do this for a minute or so and then tighten the screw

If your pool has the skimmer system there is a hose coming from the bottom of the skimmer to the wall of the pool which would be your suction to the pump. Disconnect the hose clamp from the suction port that goes through the wall of the pool remove the hose then unscrew the blue adapter on the inside of the pool there you will find a strainer / screen. Whatever gets pass the basket in the skimmer get's plugged up in that screen causing the pump to starve for water causing the LOW FLOW sensor to go off on the Saltwater pump.

Let me know if this helps any.

You problem is not the salt unit, your problem is PUMP related. You are getting good enough water flow. Check the pump as well as the filter. remove the filter cartridge and try the system without it. If the problem goes away then wash your filter and retest. If the problem comes back replace the filter cartridge. If the problem remains without the cartridge in place, you have a blockage in the plumbing which is preventing proper water flow.

We keep on getting code 90 on the salt water system

in side the hose attached to the system from the pool is a filter, we cleaned ours that fixed it right up. Did not know it was there.
The hose is the one going into the pump system at the base.
