Question about Ryobi Cultivator

Open Question

Engine starts easily but when I squeeze the gas it chokes the engine out. It can idle endlessly but when i go for the gas it stalls out. I took off the air filter and unscrewed the carb. And cleaned it thoroughly to no avail. What could make it do this? thanks

SOURCE: Ryobi 790r trimmer has low power and stalls

Maybe a quick fix and maybe not
check your muffler the factory puts a spark arrestor screen that tends to plug after awhile
there is a little plate on the side muffler that needs to be removed to access the screen you may need a torx bit or allen wrench to remove
you may have to remove the back half of the plastic cover to access the screws
remove screen and clean with carb. cleaner or equivalent make sure you can see through it and reverse the procedure to put it back

If the engine dies when you try to speed it up chances are your muffler is the problem. Any equipment that uses a gas/oil will eventually have a stopped up muffler due to carbon buildup. This restricts the air flow and the engine won't run or open up. First take the muffler off and see if you can start and adjust the carb with it off. Turn both the air and the gas adjustment screws all the way in, then back them both out one and a quarter turns. Start from there.
Unstop the muffler by throwing it in an open fire for 10 to 15 mins or using a torch to burn the carbon out. There is a screen in the muffler that I would toss out (unless you live in California) for the only purpose it serves is catching carbon. Let the muffler cool on its own, don't cool with water or you will warp it and it won't seal right. Also while the muffler is off check the muffler port and scrape off any buildup there with a knife. >>If you Adjust to 1/2 Turns In and the Engine Still Struggles to Over Rev, then Return the Adjustment Screw to 1 1/2 Turns Out from Snug and Turn the Screw Out 1/4 Turn. Do the Over Rev Test. Continue this Process Until you have the Engine Over Revving without Struggle. 
>>By Adjusting the Carburetor on this Style Carburetor Until the Engine Over Revs without Struggle, you have Adjusted the Air Mixture to the Best Possible Setting.

SOURCE: Engine starts but dies when I pull throttle trigger

you need to adjust the high speed needle turn it out in 1/4 increments as you throttle it, low speed may have to come out alittle but do high speed first. I had to answer this as I use to have a pastor john in sturgeon bay, miss him alot.

Stalls when choke is opened.


If you adjusted idle to spec with the choke on, you need to do it again with a fully warm engine. Try turning up the idle with the choke on, to around 3k rpm, then see if you can back off on the choke.
You have a fueling issue - have you done carbs before? there are internal passages and settings that must be cleaned and adjusted.

I've a 1981 Vette that idles very rough with a cold engine start.


You need to have the choke adjusted so it runs on a fast idle so the engine can warm up or you may need the carb to be rebuild and adjusted properly.

My 1996 VF 750 C Magna starts fine with the choke open. After a minute or so as I reduce the choke and try to open the throttle, the engine just stalls out. Cannot seem to get the throttle to control


I think you are mixed up. The choke is usually closed to start a cold engine and opened once the motor warms up. The choke is closed to restrict the air flow and make the mixture richer in fuel. You can't open a choke that's already open. It's stalling because it's starved of fuel. Either a blockage or the fuel pump is not supplying enough gas.

If it doesn't stall out on you while driving, I wouldn't worry too much about it, I am not sure about the idle adj, I have never even bothered to look at mine, I know my 99 with carbs has an idle adj, and I know my 02 s4 stalls every now and then at a light, but never been a problem other than embarrassing. The choke is not really a choke but a low speed jet or idle jet because other wise there would be no gas going in the throttle, the twist grip does nothing till the engine starts. My 99, I can't touch the throttle till it fires or it will flood, (carbs), the 02, spin the throttle all day, it will never start. hit the idle jet, varoom, My 02 idles at 1100. Hope this helps.

This is purely related to a primary fault in the fuel system but the ignition also needs to be checked.
So check the fuel filter remove carburetor and check the fuel chambers and ports for dirt and clogging. Check the fuel jets and see if these are clean.'
Now check the spark plugs, the gap and the spark intensity, if not check the HT coil, the HT wires.
Now the tuning requires the attention of an expert as when you tune the engine the condition will be evident. The fuel/air mixture and the ignition timing must allow the engine to idle with even motion.
On raising of the RPM the engine must come up in power easily.
I am sure if these two setting are in order the engine must work efficietly. However is the engine has clocked more miles, then the compression ratio , the valve settings must be checked.

I have a roll air compresor its the weelbarrow type gas powerd wen i start it it fills up then it shuts off it will start again wen tanks are empty and the prosses has to be repited over an over


The pilot valve controls the pressure, idles the engine when set pressure is obtained and releases compressed air thru small vent while the engine is idling. If the idle is set too low, the engine may stall. Try increasing idle speed and make sure that when set pressure is reached that air is venting from pilot muffler vent. The pilot valve can be easily tested. With engine off and pressure in tank, flip the pilot valve start lever up then down. When flipped up, the throttle control shuld activate idle and the pull rope should be easy to pull. With lever down, throttle is pulled on engine and compressor is loaded making the rope very difficult to pull. If the engine stalls with air in the tank flip lever up to easily start engine then down to pump. Good holidays

There appears to be a thermal movement of choke mechanism that comes about once vehicle is warmed up. Check the chock connections, hot water pipe and linkages tight or clear.

Are you laying off the choke at any point? Full choke should only be used when starting a cold engine, it should run with no choke on full throttle. If there is not enough throttle i'd first try adjusting the tiny black screw on the carb beneath your air filter while you have it idling, letting the throttle have a little bit more room. If this doesn't work and you're running it properly than you may need to make some adjustments to the H L settings for your gas/air mix. This is also done while idling mind you and only with a clean air filter.

ok buddy on the carb will be some sort of screw and idle screw turn this in 1/4 of a turn with the machine running until it idles at 1000rpm also the choke will stall the engine when warm the choke is only for cold starts get back to me more info or problems f4d68ca.jpg

Car idles low, stalls after start


Common issue at the shop (i'm a ford technician), here is what I do to correct it.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
