Troubleshooting kenmore refrigerator

defrost problem but many ways to go with that. Best to start with Timer, then defrost tstat, then element, in that order narrow down which one is bad. Timer if manual will allow you to advance to defrst and if your defrost system is heating you will know within ten minutes of running. If it does heat up around the ice and you hear sizzling then you need new timer. If not then pull panel and check the defrost tstat for continuity while frozen it should be closed signified by a beep on the continuity tester. also check the heater for ohms (resistance) if it shows resistance or beeps also probably good.

HOW DOES A MODEL 315P ICE MACHINE GO INTO HARVEST?

The ice machine has a HARVEST TIMER. You can adjust the harvest time, it comes from the factory for 3 minutes. You should not have to adjust it 3 minutes is plenty of time if every thing is working right. If the machine is operating making ice but not falling in storage bin then check these possible cause.
1. ICE may be stuck in the evaporator and the unit is " frozen up "
POSSIBLE SOLUTION: Clean and sanitize.
Possible Cause: Harvest time set too short - timer needs adjustment.
2. Harvest timer bad: replace harvest timer.

Ice maker not working

The first thing I would check is the FILL Sensor. It usually is a Wire or Paddle device that sits above the ice. Most of them you can manually move up to a locked position that shuts off the ice machine.
Also, some machines have an OFF switch on the Ice Machine Motor housing.

Ice build up in the bottom of a woods upright freezer. have romvoed ice and taken hair blower to the tube and water drains. Does not solve problem ice continues to build up

ic Defrost Thermostat
This is the component that controls how long the heater stays on when the machine is in defrost mode. Say the defrost cycle is thirty minutes, the heater may only be on for ten of those thirty minutes on the timer controls. On Adaptive Defrost Controls, when the heater shuts off, shortly after the machine exits defrost mode. Basically if the heater only stays on for ten minutes, the whole defrost cycle will only be about 12 or 13 minutes longe is continueing to build up due to one of the defrost cycle parts not fucntioning properly this is the most likely piece to be causing your ice up issue do a continuity test on the thermostat to assure that it is working properly
Basically when the heater comes on, it starts to melt the frost on the evaporator. Once all the ice and frost is gone, the temperature behind the panel will start to rise. Once the temperature behind the panel rises to a certain temperature, the thermostat will break the current of electricity going to the heater. Bam, it shuts off and prevents your freezer from becoming a sauna, or an oven. I'm sure you get the drift. The heater is on the bottom of the evaporator coils and the defrost thermostat sits on top of the evaporator coils.
Defrost Heater
This is the last component in the defrost system. This one should be pretty simple. By now if you have read this far you should already know what this does and how important is it. Some defrost heaters are a coil of wire in a glass tube under the evaporator coils. Works like a light bulb basically. The other style looks like the bake element in your stove. They both get red hot either way and melt the frost
Defrost control or timer.refrigerator-defrost-timers.jpg Some refrigerators have a defrost timer. This type works like a clock. Every eight hours or so the machine hits the defrost spot and that's when defrost occurs

Some refrigerators have an Adaptive Defrost Control. This is what makes a refrigerator energy efficient. It varys the length of time it takes the machine to go into defrost. So instead of the energy hogging heater 240545401adc-board.jpgcoming on every eight hours, it may be 24 hours, 18 hours, 10.5 hours, who knows. It depends on how many times you have opened the doors, how long the compressor has run. This is good because the refrigerator may not need to go into defrost every eight hours. Now you are saving energy.

and lastly there is the fan also if it is not working will not allow the flow of air to leave the inside of the freezer. Continuity test can also be done on the heater as well and the least likely would be the timer to go bad in some models they have a board on the back of the machine instead of a defrost timer if you have any further questions please message me back and please remember to rank how this opinion has helped as well Thanks again Rick

In the back of the freezer there is a ''condenser'' unit that leaks & ice forms along the back of the freezer and bottom. I have opened a drain hole & attached a hose but the water freezes before...

Good day,
First, if ice maker equipped, the fill tube going into the ice maker may be leaking. Shut the water off to the machine, and disconnect the line for now. It can be addressed later.
Although a pain, I would recommend the machine be un plugged for 24 hours and melt and dry out the freezer compartment. If you have a floor fan to blow into the freezer compartment, even better.
Second, There is a limit thermostat clipped to the top of the evaporator. It's a round 1" device.
If I have a problem machine with this problem, I bump the temperature of that tstat 5 degrees.
For example, if it's a 50 degree tstat, I replace it with a 55 degree.
If 55 degree I replace it with a 60 degree. If 60 already, I replace it with a new limit of the same value, since there is nothing above 60 degrees that makes sense. This is to guarantee the old one isn't opening prematurely and not producing enough heat.
As an option, and you might want to wait on this, there are timers that have a longer defrost cycle to aid drainage.

Timers have a defrost cycle that runs between 20 minutes to as high as 35 minutes. Longer is better.
In this case an appliance parts house is your friend.
With the complete model number, ask the counter what cycle your timer has. If your in the 20 minute range, I suggest you go to 30 or 35 minutes. A sharp counter man should be able to find a substitute. GE timers run commonly in the upper range.
I know it sounds like we're trying to kill a flea with a sledge hammer, But in an attempt to make the machine more energy efficient, over the years, they have cut back on defrost time, defrost heater temperature, and heater wattage.
P.S. The timer is mounted in the housing on the top in the fresh food compartment.

Freezer is not keeping cold and forming icicles along wall

It may just be a defrost timer. Search online for information. There is plenty to be had. Check with the website of GE for a parts breakdown or your manual if you still have it for the location of the defrost timer. You can turn it manually so it goes into defrost. Does the unit seem to be running all the time and never shuts off? If so that timer could be stuck in the cool mode and the evaporator is freezing up solid so air wont flow over it to properly cool. I've had two refrigerators I've had to repair that had defrost timer problems. One stuck in the defrost cycle and wouldn't turn on to cool, the other did what you are describing. It stuck in the cool cycle and wouldn't defrost you may need to manually bypass the cooling cycle several times to allow it to completely defrost. Usually it cycles in cool from 6,8 or ten hours and only stays in defrost for over twenty minutes. That should defrost it and allow it to start cooling again. If you notice that frost has disappeared inside on the wall replace the timer.

THE ICE MAKER WILL STOP CYCLING WHEN THE TEMP IN THE FREEZER GETS ABOVE 10 DEGREES. IT HAS A BUILT IN THERMOSTAT THAT TRIPS AT 10 DEGREES.

CHECK THE BACK WALL OF THE FREEZER FOR FROST. IS THERE A FROST BUILDUP ON THE BACK WALL? IF YES,
THERE IS A FAILURE OF THE DEFROST CYCLE.
THREE ITEMS ARE INVOLVED IN THE DEFROST CIRCUIT.
THE CONTROL(TIMER), BI-METAL, AND HEATER. FIND THE CONTROL BEHIND THE TOE PLATE NEAR THE CENTER. THERE IS A KNOB THAT CAN BE TURNED TO ADVANCE THE
TIMER. WHEN IT CLICKS AND SHUTS OFF THE COMPRESSOR AND FAN, IT IS IN DEFROST CYCLE. WAIT FIVE MINUTES AND SEE IF THERE IS ANY SIZZLING OR A RED GLOWING IN THE FREEZER. IF THERE IS, THE TIMER IS BAD. REPLACE IT. IF THERE ISN'T, THE HEATER ASSEMBLY WITH BI-METAL WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED.
