Question about Whirlpool Ultimate Care II LSQ9549L Top Load Washer

Open Question

I have a Whirlpool Ultracare ii washer that is leaking oil. The oil itself is pretty thick and similar to honey in both color and viscosity. It is leaking under the washer and also has put oil inside on the clothes. Other than that the washer runs ok.

Can the problem be with the transmission instead of the drum seal? I have the same problem and now I'm not sure what I need to fix it: transmission 'stuff' or 'seal stuff'?

SOURCE: Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washer won't spin clothes more dry than soggy

Tip the washer backward, inspect the bottom of the gearcase for oil. If oil is present, the oil has migrated to the clutch causing it to slip during spin. The gearcase and clutch will have to be replaced if oil is present. Check the owners manual for limited warranty on the gearcase. If oil is not present, the clutch is just worn and should be replaced.

SOURCE: Our Whirlpool washer won't drain

this machine has the pump directly atached to the pump assy, so if the motor is runnning your pump will drain water. more likely is that when you put the unit back together perhaps you didnt plug the lid switch assembly bak in. if there is no lid switch detected the unit will not drain or spin and when it gets to that mode it will simply stall out. no noise or anything. will fill, agitate but not spin and/or drain/ check the lid switch!

My 95 lancruiser is making a loud ticking noise when cold, it seems to diminish after driven for a bit - what can this be?

Motor oil thickens when cold- on very cold days, some grades of motor oil can be nearly the consistency of honey. It takes time for the oil to make its way from the oil pan to the top of your engine.

The ticking you hear is usually caused by the valve lifters running nearly "dry" - meaning that they are getting very little oil. As your Cruiser warms up, the oil thins and makes it "up top" much easier, so the noise decreases.

Make sure that you are following your manufacturers recommendation for the grade and viscosity of oil (example: SG SAE 10W30) for the temperatures you are operating your car in. In extreme cold weather environments, such as Chicago or Milwaukee, you may want to use an even "lighter" oil (example: 10W20 instead of 10W30) - you just have to be certain that when spring arrives, you go with the higher viscosity oil- your manufacturer normally covers this info. The grade (example: SG) is very important because it refers to the detergent content of your oil.

No vehicle manufacturer that I am aware of recommends a "straight grade" viscosity oil (example: SAE 30) in cold weather. Multi-grades, which act "lighter" in cold weather are called for.

The "W" in the oil viscosity designation means "winter" - it is the viscosity of that particular oil at 0 degrees F..... For example, "10W30" oil is as thick as an oil with a viscosity of 10 at 0 degrees F, and is as thick as an oil with a viscosity of 30 at 70 degrees F.

Pretty Cool, Huh?

It is not a good idea to use any oil thickening additive (STP, motor honey, etc...) in cold weather because they tend to add even more viscosity.

"The Court is out" regarding teflon additives such as "Slick 50" to your oil- the principle sounds good to me, and I have used them myself. Personally, a similar product has seemed to help tone down the "startup ticking" I myself have experienced.

My 96 toyota camry smokes when i start it .

automotive shops sell this stuff called honey. Its super thick oil that might slow down the leak. If the leak is coming from your oil pan try tightening the 10 or twelve small bolts around the oil pan. only go a half a turn on each so you dont smash your gasket or seal.

Oil and water leak

Chances are they are not related if the water is clean. These units can run quite a while dripping small amounts of oil. The drain hose is a possibility but there are other places it can leak from. Call a local tech he can run the machine with the cabinet removed and should be able to find the source of the water leak. good luck

Whirlpool Ultra Care II

I believe this is a similar model to mine, which did the same things. This is a direct drive style (no belt). What possible happened is the coupling in between the motor and transmission has broken partially, and it "grabbing" only under a light load. It's a relatively inexpensive (under $5) part, and can be changed pretty easily.

These couplings can be found on Ebay:

If this link doesn't post correctly, just search for "whirlpool coupling". Good luck.

Machine leaks a yellow thick consistency liquid from the bottom. Is it oil or transmission fluid or what? How do I fix it? The repair man ignored this problem.

Yes, it's oil from the transmission gear box. I'm sorry he ignored this and didn't offer to suggest its repair. Now before getting repair, I recommend pricing the repair before you make a decision. The gear box may last a while but during the time it may make a big mess. I'm not trying to make your decision for you, but this time at least you hold the cards on the final decision, Hope this helps, Sea Breeze
