Leave on for 24 hours in your car mounted unobstructed to the sky.

If it fails to locate, contact Manufacture for advice.... they will have to fix or replace or throw away.....

First time using my garmin 205W and it only holds satelite service for about 10 minutes

I recommend you replace the firmware and system software using webupdate. Updates in the Nuvi 205 firmware has increased its satellite reception and accuracy.

I hope that helps.

Nextar GPS Never acquires GPS Signal

The only thing you can try is the external antenna for this unit.

You could be in an area that has poor signal.

If it where me, I would go to a place that I could return a unit,
I only use garmin, there hand-held unit's are the top rated for
the frequency of getting satellites.

So say you have a walmart, see if you can return a unit, buy a garmin
and see if it get better reception, and if it doesn't then its not the unit.

If it does, sell you old one on ebay.

No satelite reception

Most GPS problems - Hangs, frozen screens, problems acquiring satellites, ETC, can be attributed to the device not having the latest firmware installed.
This firmware enables it to communicate with the satellites - but if they aren't speaking the same language they get confused easily. For Garmin GPS Automotive units, Garmin has you do the following before sending it in for repairs:
1 - SOFT RESET
2 - HARD RESET (CLICK HERE to see instructions for either reset)
3 - UPDATE the device using their WebUpdater software (CLICK HERE for that) Garmin is the only company that offers repairs AFTER the warranty has expired. They offer a FLAT RATE REPAIR service for units no longer in warranty. For Other GPS units please consult your owner's manual or their support site - as each model - and even manufacture dates - can lead to different reset procedures. TomTom
NAVIGON

MAGELLAN NEXTAR does NOT offer any types of Firmware or map upgrades or repair services. Instead - they have an exchange program to update to a new UNIT for around the same price as a repair would be. CLICK HERE for more on that. WARRANTY on most GPS devices is 1 year from the date of purchase. Broken screens are considered ABUSE - and not covered under warranty. Finally - If your unit is on the charger for HOURS, You've tried both the car AND USB type charger, and you turn it on... it stays on for a minute (or so) then powers down or never comes on at all - the battery has lost it's ability to hold a charge and must be replaced. Looking around YouTube - you can get a tutorial on how to CAREFULLY crack open just about any GPS. The tool(s) necessary typically are included with the battery purchase. Typically batteries run about $25 +/-. NiCd batteries are meant to be energized once a month so they keep active, and don't build up deposits that lead to their premature failure. I hope this was helpful for you. Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Satelite reception lost constantly

Hello sothypaw,

In order to receive satellite signals your GPS receiver must have a clear view of the sky. If you are using the GPS inside of a vehicle the body of the vehicle may shield the unit from receiving these signals.

To minimize this the GPS should be mounted at the lowest place within the automobile that has a clear view of the windshield and side windows. If you continue to have problems then you might consider purchasing an external antenna for use with the GPS.

Even with a properly mounted GPS you may occasionally lose satellite reception due to local terrain (hills, mountains, dense forest etc.) or other obstructions (parking garages, tunnels, etc.) which can block reception.

Best Regards,
Ken

Garmin gps, novi

What do you see if you use it in the open air? Same thing?
Some cars have a metal coating on the windows that works as a sun block, usually french cars. In these cars satellite reception is poor and this can be a reason for bad reception. Sometimes these problems also occur when a cell phone is too close to the gps. The gps does need line of sight to the sky to get a good signal, usually stuck to the windshield is sufficient.
