Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

1 Answer

Before I got dsl, I used to sign into unsecured wireless around my neighborhood and my computer responded quickly. then I decided to get my own wireless and installed IE8. Now, when I first turn on the computer, and launch IE8, it takes a while for my homepage to come up. Once it is up, then the response time is quick. It is just the initial launching what takes a while. is there anything I can do?

Welcome to IE 8. Download and install Firefox / Mozilla. It's faster, more secure, and better than IE8 will ever be. The problem in IE 8 is the way it was coded and how it tries to connect to everything at once. It can't be changed unless you have the actual code and know how to program so you can make changes. Sorry

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Is the advent 7201 able to go on internet

You can use any computer to connect to the Internet.
First you need to decide what type of broadband/Internet serviceyou require and these are -
1. DSL that uses your existing telephone line.
2. Cable that uses a cable service and can include a cable TV service.
3. A wireless 3G network which uses the mobile/cell phone network and can beseparate or combine with your cell phone account
Note - Combined services generally offer discount pricing and may include amodem/wireless router.

If you use a wireless router with the DSL or Cable Internet service and yourlaptop has a wireless card then you can also connect to the Internet at WiFihot spots like McDonalds, Star Bucks, the Airport etc.
If you use the wireless 3G wireless broadband service, then you can access theInternet anywhere where your ISP has 3G wireless coverage. You need to checkthe service coverage area where you need Internet service.
Once you decide what type of broadband your require, then you need to checkwith the various Internet Service providers to see if they can offer and thecost of the various plans.
Note the download limits and the associated additional costs if you exceed themonthly download limits. Once you sign up with a Internet Service provider, their documentation will include setting up instructions and/or installationCD.

Do you have to connect the router to the computer to use it

You have to be connected via either Wired or Wireless connection to use a router. You can use wireless exclusively, wired connection is not required, but often handy for troubleshooting connectivity issues. If you are using DSL or Cable modem, the modem is connected to the uplink port of the Router, then you either connect wired via port 1, 2, 3 or 4 (they are all the same) or a wireless connection (Default settings are unsecure wireless for most routers)

Go to security settings and either follow the security setup and use WEP. (Easy security key is your whole tele#) or leave it unsecured and open for the whole neighborhood.

1. Navigate to router's web interface<br /> 2. Login, click to Wireless button<br /> 3. Select WPA radio button as Security<br /> 4. Select Pre-Shared Key radio button and type some password to PSK String field<br /> 5. Click Apply button<br /> 6. To save and reboot the Router, click on the Tools directory tab and then click the System button. In the System<br />Settings window, click the Save and Reboot button under Save Settings and Reboot the System<br /> <br /> DSL-G604T doesn't have built in MAC access list and may hang on heavy usage. To optimize it for stable and safe connection use Router Commander program from <a href="http://www.routercommander.com">http://www.routercommander.com</a>, with it this router shows very good <span style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: HE">performance </span>and stable internet connection.

I get a strong signal when connected, but it will connect to someones unsecured network that is close by in my neighborhood before it will connect to my network. How can I keep my computer from doing this?

You can configure it to not connect to any available network. The settings vary depending on the Windows version, but it is possible in all versions to set this.
If you are using a third party WiFi program, you can generally define the preference in network sequence to connect to.

Trying to update DSL-2640R B1 firmware from v1.10 to v1.60 using file from D-Link's site (DSL-2640R_fw_1.00), extracted from their zip file. Get error message "You must select a correct file to update"....

This is a question you best address with D-Link directly. Go to their site and use their email to send them a query about your problem. They seem quite quick to respond with very helpful suggestions.

Laptop keeps asking for security key, when trying to connect wirelessly . i dont know security key

You need to ask whoever set up the wireless router what the security key is. Apparently, who ever setup the router encrypted the wireless network. Any computer wanting access to the wireless network must have the security key initially entered in for access. If it is your own router, you can access the router and change the security key your self in the wireless setup portion.

Does absense of encryption imply that others will be able to get into my computer through wireless router

Not using encryption is an invitation for problems. As far as any slowdown, if your wireless lan is 54Mbps and your cable or dsl is only 6Mbs, some small bit of slowdown on the wireless side isnt going to make much difference.
