Do i Turn the Power off ?

Seagate st310005fdb2e1-rk. 1TR external hard drive.
Urban legend says that i need to turn the power off when not using my external hard drive or it will fry. . (this model has no power swtich, so i would be unplugging the power supply and re-plugging it). Is this true. ? One person out of 2 says i need to disconnect the power supply until i want to use it again but no one will tell me 100% for sure.
Can i leave it plugged in, with power on, on the idle setting or should i unplug it to stop it from burning out.
Much Thanks

No one will say 100% either way because there is no 100% answer. If you leave it plugged in at all times it will most likely burn out the power supply faster than if you disconnect it when not in use. It was not intended for constant on situations or designed for that. You should be able to unplug the power from the external hard drive itself however that won't save your power supply. I would put it on a power strip with a switch and use the switch to turn it on and off when I needed it.

It sounds like the controller for the drive is shot. You will probably need a new enclosure as long as the drive itself is OK that should do it. What is probably happening is that the controller in the enclosure is broken and trying to pull too much power.

Please i need the power adapter rating for seagate

Have you got the original power adapter?
If so the voltage details are printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter.
If the external USB Seagate hard drive houses a 31/2" drive then it requires an power adapter that provides +12 volts and +5 volts both supplying approx 2000mA of current.
If the Seagate uses a 21/2" (laptop) hard drive then it only requires +5 volts power adapter.
The only problem is the power connector to the external drive, make sure it suits the external hard drive unit and the power pins are correctly wired for the Seagate. If the polarity of the plug is incorrect lt wired (ie reverse polarity) then it could damage the USB hard drive and adapter case.

Lost power supply for Model#ST3400801CB-RK

The power supply for this drive is not ordinary. This means it has two pairs: 5.0V (1.5 A) and 12V (1.5 A) of power pins

Power supply for Seagate 400GB

Ebay or seagate.com may be a solution.
I've used those Seagate portables and 2 have caused problems.
Or disassemble the unit, remove the drive and buy a portable case or USB adapter.
