Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I upgraded the bios on my Eee PC 701 this afternoon, Then when I tried to go back to desktop mode, an error message came up, something to the effect that there was not enough room left in my home directory. I shut the computer down and when I tried to reboot it just showed the flash screen and then hangs.

Hi,

Before doing a BIOS upgrade, always make sure that your eeePC has a full battery and is connected to the power. You may have such problem.

If your EEE PC support Crashfree BIOS, connect it to power, if it can still turn on put the CD it came with in the CD. If it supports Crashfree BIOS, it should reflash it to the original BIOS.

You may follow instructions in your User's Manual for guidelines on BIOS recovery via CrashFree BIOS.

Hope this helps.

Waiting your comments.

Everything was going ok until I tried to go back to the full desktop mode from easy mode. The BIOS upgrade was most radical thing that I was doing so I just thought that it might have been the problem. I'm away from home and without my cd. Was wondering if switching to EasyPeasy might solve the problem. It really seems to be a boot problem rather than a BIOS problem (unless the two might be related, I'm only a novice not an expert). Also, where would I start to look for any options regarding "Crashfree" BIOS.

    Hi,

As you know the easy mode, which uses the IceWM window manager, is the default mode upon boot.

Did you try to boot with easy mode again? What is your operating system? Windows , Linux or Mac.

It may not be a BIOS problem. Try to boot in easymode.

  • won2drive Jul 12, 2010

It is a Linux system, (hence the reference to "easy mode/full desktop mode") I had changed my settings so that it would boot directly into full desktop mode but of course when I wanted to do any upgrading, I had to switch to easy mode. Is it possible to interrupt the boot process and tell the system to boot into easy mode? As I said before, the whole problem started when I tried to switch to desktop from easy and that is what makes me think it is not a boot problem. Just hoped I could solve the problem sooner than when I get home at the end of this week but if not.....
Thanks again for your efforts to assist.
    A.

    Hi,

You can try this F9 restore command to set factory settings.

    Good luck.

Is it possible to boot without the windows manager starting up? I tried the F9 and nothing different happened. The screen just flashes as if a backlighting flash and once in a while a strip of green bars shoot across the top of the screen and it hangs. Perhaps if I could boot into a text editer without the gui starting up, I could check the "hidden menu". Looks like I'll just have to find my restore cd. I would think there would be a place that I could download it from.
    Thanks again.

How to restart my Eee pc like new

In order to get your Eee PC running like new, you will have to reinstall the operating system. Windows experiences a problem that is commonly referred to as 'winrot', in which the operating system becomes slower and slower as time goes by. After a few years, many people opt to reinstall the operating system or change operating systems in order to deal with the problem. If you choose to reinstall windows, you will need to visit the Asus support site and download all the drivers for your Eee PC 701 after reinstallation.

If you would rather not reinstall, you can always try to improve your computer's performance to get a lesser, but hopefully noticeable benefit. Programs like Ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) and Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com) are designed to keep your computer running smoothly and error free. You also want to make sure you have an anti-malware solution on your computer. If you do not wish to buy a well-known branded antivirus suite, you can opt to use the free, but highly effective AVG Antivirus program (http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage).

Hi, I have bought a used asus 701 4g. when browsing it sometimes crashes and reverts to desktop. How do I find out which edition of firefox i have and howdo I upgrade it if necessary. I missed out on...

John,

You can find the version of Firefox you are using by going to Help > About Mozilla Firefox when inside the browser. Firefox usually prompts for upgrades, but on limited or old versions of Linux such as that on the Eee PC 701 (Xandros, to be specific), that doesn't always work. Check out the Add/Remove Software utility under Settings for updates.

My eee pc 701 sd when startup i get blue screen cant see desktop

Try starting it up in safe mode and see if you can get in. If you can, then it is a driver issue and you may want to check you have the correct drivers. If you continue to get the issue, it could be a hardware issue and you should get the computer checked out.

BIOS update

1. Check your PC or motherboard manufacture for BIOS upgrade and upgrade BIOS firmware.
2. Try to start your PC in a safe mode by pressing F8 before windows starts. Then select a safe mode with or without network support.
3. If your computer starts in the safe mode, check if your hard drive is not full or close to full. If it is close to full you need to remove some data from your disk. Try to remove temporary files and clear your Recycle Bin. Restart your computer.
4. You might run low on your memory. If your PC doesn't have enough physical memory, windows is creating virtual memory by using space from your hard drive.
5. If neither solution works, try to run a "CHKDSK C: /R" from recovery console.

Good luck!!!
