How to cut a 3" hole

I am fabricating a rudder for a 26' sailboat. I need to cut a hole in the rudder 3" id. and a hub to fit this hole 2.999" od. How do i do this?
I see the 6 exterior holes in my router base, are there guides that go in these?

Well I'd use a 3" Forstner bit to cut the hole, not a router. Here's a link so you know what I'm talking about:
A forstner bit is more precise but usually not used in a handheld drill situation. A keyhole saw may be too imprecise for the rudder although a dedicated (not interchangeable) keyhole saw is one option. The depth of the cut would be the other problem here.
A VERY slow drill setting is required. A high torque, low speed drill suitable for use with a diamond cutter hole saw would be best. i.e. max 450rpm.
In the boat building industry you would normally use a guide that you bolt to the rudder or mast to drill such a hole. I don't have a ready reference for such a guide but you may have luck simply asking a local boat-builder (very very nicely) to borrow one! It is easier to drill three mounting bolts into the rudder to hold the guide and later backfill with a quality (read "marine") epoxy.
A boatbuilder I worked with had one such mount specially made. It is simply a flange turned from steel - the harder (the steel) the better but also more expensive. Three bolt holes in the collar allow for mounting. The centre hole is the exact right dimension for either a drill bit or forstner bit.
The problem on the rudder is the non-flat surface. A piece of packing timber, crafted to match the curved surface to a flat plate is the best idea.
As an alternative a special drill-bit like a fish-tail can be used. These bits can be used at high speed to cut an accurate hole at the size you want. It all depends how exact you need to be.
Whatever you choose, trial the hole and hub cuts in a similar grade timber first. Whichever way you go the standard solution is a custom solution!
I would suggest a plug cutter for the hub and FAMAG is the best, made in Germany. A matched pair for 3" i/d and o/d is the best option for an exact match. This is the normal procedure for such a boatbuilding operation.
Good Luck!

Rear wheel seal is leaking. They call for 2 different seals, one has the right OD but the wrong ID. Other has the right ID but wrong OD. 6.5 diesel Is this a special rearend.

IF you have a fully floating hub ( one where you remove the axle to get to the hub nut to remove the hub) there will be only one seal inside the hub If you have a semi floating axle( where you have to remove the brake gear and backing plate to remove the axle then the seal is inside the axle housing inside the bearing. Best remove the hub /axle and take the seal to a bearing supply outlet and they will match the seal to your sample.

Here is a great step-by-step process posted recently on Instructables:

1. Mark and cut hole in No. 10 can
2. Mark and cut hole in a soup can
3. Cut the bottom off a 2nd soup can and fit in the first as an elbow
4. Cut and fit the chimney from soup can #3
5. Cut a hole in the No 10. can for the Chimney to go through
6. Assemble and fill the space between the 3 soup cans and the No. 10 can with insulation material, like Perlite.
7. Make a fuel shelf with soup can #4 that sits flat inside soupcan #1
8.stuff in some kindling, light and enjoy!

Note: a similar process could be done with bigger cans or other materials.

How do I replace the pull start?

Remove the four screws securing the starter houseing, with the starter removed, pull the cord out, tuck the cord into the cut a way in the side of the pulley and allow the cord to wind in slowley to let the tention off the spring, make sure all the tention has gone, now remove the centre screw, take away the pulley centre and the round spring from behind, note the hole in the pulley and the centre hub for the spring location, now carefully remove the pulley, be aware there is a large spring behind, remove the knot in the end and remove the starter handle, fit the cord back into the new pulley, refit the pulley into the cover making sure to locate into the spring behind, thread the cord back through the cover and reconnect the handle, knot the cord, re fit the round spring back into the locating hole in the pulley, re fit the pulley hub making sure the spring fits into the hole in the hub, re fit the securing screw, now put the cord back into the cut a way in the side of the pulley, wind up the spring, allow it to pull the cord back into the starter, only wind it enough to pull the cord fully back into the cover, re fit the starter.

gas line is 1/8" ID. NAPA autoparts sells replacement gas line that works but has an OD that will not fit hole in plastic frame where the carb sits. Just drill the plastic to the OD of new gas line and use needlenose pliers to install the line. Same goes for the gas tank. Just make sure it is tight fit so it does not leak.

Pipes are usually measured by what is known as ID and OD. ID simply stands for inside diameter while OD stands for outside diameter. If the pipe you have going to the converter is 2 1/4 OD you would need the converter to have a 2 1/4 ID in order for the pipe to fit properly inside and to assure good sealing with a 2 1/4 clamp. Or welding is always an option...either way same rules apply.
