Whirlpool Dishwasher DU1145XTPBA fills w/water but then nothing

I have a Whirlpool Dishwasher DU1145XTPBA i had the clean light blinking problem and reset the console. Now when I run it, it fills with water but does not move the water around to clean the dishes. Is this a repair we could attempt ourselves?

It wouldn't be the door switch since i can get it to fill. I honestly think the last couple of times it ran all the way through without throwing the water around, since it said "clean" but clearly the dishes were not.
Wouldn't it be a motor or pump that moves the water around?

From what you have mentioned I understand the dishwasher moves through the whole wash and drain cycle but you do not hear the water moving inside the dishwasher and even though it completes the program but leaves dishes dirty.

Please check if the dish washer is warm in the end, I am assuming your dishwasher has an internal water heater. Also observe if the wash cycle is running longer than it used to before. This is the time it takes between filling water and when drain pump starts running.

I am assuming you have already done the normal checks of cleaning the bottom of the diswasher and checking the washer arms holes are clear.

If the dishwasher is totally silent during the wash cycle then the wash motor is not starting and a possible reason is that its start capacitor is not functional. (part 26). If you are not familiar with electrical stuff then you will have to get a technician to fix it.

Ok, I just started it to check and again, it fills and then stops, then clicks and then hums. I'm reluctant to let it complete the wash cycle since it only hums through it and I know Whirlpool has had past problems with overheating.
As a non-professional, I would think there is a motor or pump that moves the water and it sounds like it's clicking to come on and then just humming, unable to do it's job...maybe?

  • Sam Jul 11, 2010

The click is a sign the timer /controller is telling the wash motor to start but it can't and hence the humming. Just check if the washer arm is moving freely. Other than that as I mentioned before it could be the start capacitor which could have gone.

Good luck. Do post a comment so I can help you further if required.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. From what you have described it seems you could have a problem with the heating circuit (i.e. element, thermostat or wiring). It rarely happens but it could also be the door switch not engaging properly when the door is closed (slightly bend the door latch down making sure it doesn't hit the door when you close it). Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Where is the whirlpool du1145xtpba drain pipe located

It is located at the rear of the dishwasher and it connects to the garbage disposal, when it drains you can see the water entering the disposer if you shine a flashlight in the opening.

Flashing or blinking green clean light 7 times?

This dishwasher looks for a temperature rise of the water during a heating cycle if it fails to see this rise for multiple cycles it may shut down and blink the clean light 7 times.

The failure can be wide ranging here are a few things to check before resetting the control.

-The unit not being level so both door switches do not make contact

- The sump plugged up so water is not pumping across the heater (see sump clean out below)

- Not enough water filling the dishwasher

- The heat element is not working

To reset the control use this key dance within 5 seconds press:

HEATED DRY, NORMAL, HEATED DRY, NORMAL

This will cause you to enter the diagnosis cycle once this is finished or you hit cancel the control should be unlocked and ready to use.

Hi

If clean light is blinking then it may be an issue with heater circuit, door switch or wash pump, please reset the power to the dishwasher. After, 5 minutes check if you are still getting the same error. If yes, then it is a water heating fault. To resolve this error try pressing this reset sequence-- Heat Dry - Normal - Heat Dry - Normal or High Temp - Air Dry - High Temp - Air Dry or Hi Temp Scrub, energy saver dry, Hi Temp Scrub, energy saver dry or High Temp Wash-Heated Dry-High Temp Wash-Heated Dry . Now let the unit run for 2-3 minutes and then you press the Cancel/Drain button and allow it to completely drain and reset. If this doesn't work then it's an issue with the wash pump not pumping the water past the heater efficiently or due to lack of water to heat. Please make sure that heater is not open circuited and is heating the water efficiently. You'll have to check the heater using a multimeter; the meter should read between 3000 to 3300 ohms (Use multimeter on Rx1 ohm setting). If heater is fine then make sure water pressure is optimum and fill valve is working fine. Hope this helps... Please post back if you need more information.

Blinking clean light

Hi,

This blinking indicates a failure to properly heat the water, the link below will have instructions on how to reset the control so you can use the dishwasher and it will provide areas to look as to why it failed. Let me know if it was helpful.

Whirlpool DU1100XTP vlean light blinking

Watch the light closely. If it blinks 7 times then pauses, this indicates a heater or door latch issue.
Press the following buttons in sequence: Hi Temp Wash, Heated Dry, Hi Temp Wash, Heated Dry, Hi Temp Wash.
If this doesn't work, check the tech sheet. (should be stuck to inside of the bottom toe panel)

All lights should illuminate then a diagnostic sequence will start.
Listen carefully, as soon as you hear the water begin to fill, open the door and feel the heater. if cold, check the heater for continuity (should be around 10ohms)
Also, bend the door catch on the dishwasher tub downward, this will engage the door latch better. Don't bend too far as it will hit the door while closing.

Dishwasher blinking light

The blinking "clean light" is a common problem with some of the Kenmore and Whirlpool models. I believe the problem is attributed to water supply temperatures being too low when filling. Apparently, there are some sensitivity issues with the temperature sensing circuits in some dishwashers. There is a reset sequence that you can try to clear the fault. Push the NORMAL WASH then HEATED DRY buttons in that sequence two to three times. The unit will enter diagnostics mode, but can be stopped by pressing the CANCEL button. This will clear any existing faults and should return the dishwasher to normal operation. To keep the fault from returning, it is recommended that you run your hot water faucet in the kitchen to heat the water in the supply line for the dishwasher (most dishwashers are fed from the kitchen sink supply line). The theory is that you will fill the dishwasher with hot water instead of the cool water that is normally in the lines before the hot water from the hot water tank heats the line. This should satisfy the requirements of the temperature sensing circuits. If the fault reappears, there should be a tech sheet located inside the lower panel under the door that explains what the fault is. The flashing light will be a series of flashes, followed by a pause. If you indeed have a component problem, it will depend on what the flashing light sequence is in determining WHAT component is bad. Let me know if this helps you. Post back with your comments or questions.

PS Your dishwasher is actually manufactured by Whirlpool.

QuietGuard3: Clean light flashing 7 times? Press Heated Dry, press Normal Wash, then press Heated Dry again and press Normal Wash again (that's 4 button-presses) and that should fix it.
