Question about Kenmore 57029 Side by Side Refrigerator

3 Answers

I have a Kenmore Coldspot m# 57282791. Last night, it stopped staying cold, and I have not heard the motor/compressor come on at all since then (the part that cools the fridge, right?) There is a small fan back near the water line hookup that is working, but it is very quiet for hours now. The fridge side is almost lukewarm, and the freezer side has mushy peas in it. It is older, built in 1998 and we bought it used. It has worked well for the last year with no problems except occasionally freezing some produce.

Hi,

If the compressor is not running, it could be either a bad relay or compressor. This is not an issue with defrost components or temp. control .If you have experience in repairing appliances, could take all precautions necessary and use multimeter - You could do a continuity check on compressor motor and all combination's. An infinity value on multimeter would confirm bad compressor.

On the side of the compressor you will see a box (maybe a cover) remove the cover if it has one and then remove the wire harness. next you will see the relay with the capacitor mounted to it. give the relay a tug and pull it off the side of the compressor. once you have it off pull the capacitor off and then give the relay a shake. If it rattles the relay is bad. if the relay does not rattle the compressor is bad and you will need to call a service guy to replace the compressor.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Hello,

what this indicate is that there is power disconnection on the fridge, the fridge it self is ok/alright .

what you will need to check on from here is the fuse on the wire connected to the main power supply replace it with a better one but if there is any ,but if not the then check on the wire connected to the capacitor if there is any form of disconnection onthe capacitor then the problem is solve .

thank and thanks for using fixya.

I am not mechanically inclined at all. I don't know what a capacitor is/what it looks like. Can you advise? Also, there is still power going to the unit since the fan is working, the light inside works too.

You should check the warranty they gave with repair thecompressor could be defective or they didn't braze the joints well and refrigerant leaked out

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigeratordo not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many otherthings that can go wrong. If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing thencheck out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to starttrouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then callinga repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Kenmore Coldspot not keeping cold. Ice in freezer

What are your temp controls set to? If the controls are set to the max setting and it won't reach temp, you could have a broad range of problems ranging from bad door gaskets, to bad temp controls, to a low refrigerant charge, to possible a failing mechanical part such as a fan motor or compressor.

Kenmore Coldspot compressor kicking on and off

It sounds like you may have toasted one of the starting componets. Either the start relay or the start capacitor has probably failed, causing the compressor to try to start, and then kick off on overload. Hope this helps

Unplug the Ref for 15-20 min., plug it back in and listen for the compressor to start. You will need to be behind the Ref so you can tell if the compressor or the fan is running. It will help to take the cover off so you can see the compressor.
Compressor not running but you hear a clicking noise. The relay needs to be replaced.
Compressor runs but not cooling. Low on coolant

I also have the same refrigerator model 106.56566400 and periodically when the power goes off in the house the refrigerator & freezer will stop cooling. Try pushing the on/off button located inside the refrigerator to the left of the digital temperature controls. Hold the button down, this turns the unit off, then press it again to turn it back on. This basically resets the refrigerator, and most of the time works to get the refrigerator cooling again. Try this first before calling a repair man.
