I have 2 SB-800 flash units and one works perfectly as it should. Using the same camera, I attach the other falsh (and EVEN took the new batteries out of the working one and put them into the bad one so that everything would be the same). This flash will look like its firing, ready lights on, the whole nine yards but the images are underexposed like almost black- basically like it did not fire at all. All settings, etc. appear to be the same but i was wondering if its me or the flash- out of 6 images it seems like it fires for 1 or 2 and the other 4 are black. Is there like a reset button to change back to factory settings or something??

It does not look like a camera problem at all coz the other flash is working well with the same settings. However if you can get me the make and model of the cam, I can tell you if some adjustments can be to correct this problem.

i am using a nikon d200- i have a few and swap cameras and flashes for various jobs. You think it is a flash problem then?? Really it must be since the other works perfectly fine. i am wondering if i should send to nikon for repair. i dont want to "put a bandaid" on it correcting with camera settings as much as i just want the flash to work as it should. Thanks.

In that case then yes, I do think you should get a new xenon lamp for the flash or a new condenser(holds the charge for the flash to come on) for it. I believe that condenser is not charging as it should and that it is the source of the problem. A local camera tech should do the job for you at a reasonable cost.

Repair manual for Nikon SB 700 flash

You might already know this but use great caution when opening any photo flash. The capacitor inside can generate enough of a shock to kill you, even with the unit off and the batteries removed as it stores a "charge".

Stuck in AF-ILL ONLY mode

Is the flash still on the camera when you do this? If so, check your camera settings as well as the camera may be over-riding you.

If the flash is not on the camera, some of the settings for custom settings can only be changed with it on the camera via camera commands.

If you do not have the manuals, you can get them here:

Bought a Nikon Speedlight SB-600 in August. Tested the flash and it fired ok. I took out the flash a few days ago to use at a graduation and the "ready" light did not come on. Consequently it did...

Hi grwcamp, Sorry to hear about it not working at the graduation. Are in the correct position (I am sure you did but, we must start someplace). Look inside, see if there is battery acid in there.
If with new/fresh batteries it still does not work call Nikon. You have a warranty on it so it should be covered.

I have a Nikon D40x with a Nikon Speedlight SB-800. The speedlight is not working. I have the camera on, new batteries in the speedlight and speedlight on. Not powering up. Is there some secret battery...

With new batteries in the flash, and it being off camera what happens when you press the test button. If still it does not flash call Nikon 1-800-645-6689

Why is my sb-800 melting my batteries?

Thre is a non-repairable short in the capacitor charge circuit that puts a big amp load on the batteries.

May be repaired by Nikon service... but the electronics contain high voltage. Do not attempt to repair yourself and I wouldn't trust it even if Nikon repairs it. Why risk burning your camera and equipment!?!

--sorry--

Ready light on my SB-800 speedlight

put in a fresh set of batteries. The ready light won't turn on until the flash capacitor is fully charged. And if your battery is weak, it can take very long (minutes!) to fill the capacitor. You still can fire the flash even it is not ready, it will just dump whatever power it stored in the capacitor.

Nikon SB-800 Defect

Have you tried other batteries?

If one cell has died, there will be enough power to power up the flash, but not enough to charge it reasonably fast. It may also stop the other cells charging up properly if they are charged together. I've had this problem with poor quality rechargeables before. I think flashguns put pretty heavy demands on batteries.
