Question about Friedrich QuietMaster KS15L10 Thru-Wall/Window Air Conditioner

Open Question

KS15L10-E compressor trying to start with high-pitched squeal then failing but starting just fine about 30 seconds later? This is 3rd compressor with this problem. One note: If I allow the fan to turn off between compressor cycles, the compressor stays off for about 3.5 minutes then turns on fine. If I keep the fan running between compressor cycles, the compressor only stays down for about 1.5 minutes and tries to restart with a high-pitched squeal then fails. It will restart itself with no problems about 30 seconds later. I have been able to repeat the above process numerous times. The problem is that I need the fan to run between cycles.

SOURCE: friedrich quietmaster fan does not come on and

Shut the power off to the unit, spin the fan blade to see if it spins freely. If it doesn't spin freely, (there appears to be a little drag when you spin it),the bearings are bad, if it does spin freely, then try moving the motor shaft from side to side if there’s any play in the shaft side to side then the bearings are worn and motor needs replaced. Then, check the capacitor, if it’s bulging even slightly, the capacitor is bad and needs replaced. Most of the time people replace the capacitor if motor seems ok. If capacitor is ok, turn power on to see if the motor is getting the proper voltage, if it is and not trying to run, then the windings are probably open, the motor's bad and needs replaced.

Sounds like thermostat is failing. There is a factory set resistor that helps the thermostat keep a 2 degree accuracy. Second possibility is that you have a fan or direct airflow from the cooling system, being devirted, that is allowing the cool air hit the thermostat on the wall.

Sounds to me like the bearings are going bad in the motor. The hotter it gets the grease breaks down and the squealing starts.

High pitched squeal when starting car

Sounds like a belt, and possibly the one on the power steering pump which may be the sepentine belt. Could be caused by power steering pump pulley resistance or the belt tensioner bearing. Try a visual check with motor running. Be careful of moving parts!

Breaks have a high pitch squeal when i break ata any speed. got breaks checked out and mechanic saidneverything was fine

A high pitch squeal is typically normal. However I have NEVER liked it.

I would replace your brakes with a higher quality brake pad, and see if you still have the problem.

Your pads can squeal when they are getting low, i would also get a second opinion on the condition of the pads.

A softener will generally make a high pitch squeal when it is backwashing. This is generally the first cycle in most softeners. It may also do this during the final fast rinse cycle. The second brining cycle takes about an hour. That is why you may have a delay in the squeal. Also I have seen at times when a power surge can force the drive motor into a short backwash. Usually just a few minutes. It may help to put a surge surpressor at the water softener plug.

Sounds like a problem I had with a Polaroid t.v. Take the cover off the back and look for capactors that are buldging on the top. The top should be slightly concave. If they are convex at all, you can buy new one at Radio Shack and replace them for under $5.00
