Question about Sewing Machines

Open Question

I have a kenmore 19005 sewing machine made by Janome. I always thought Janome was a respected company in the field of sewing machines and was delighted when they told me that the Kenmore 19005 was made by janome. however (you knew that was coming) the embroidery foot is plastic. I use it a lot in my quilting designs and for clothing for my grandchildren quilt desings for my children decorating jeans etc. i bought the machine less than a year ago and the plastic embroidery foot cracked and is now broken. i had the machine into sears repair center for servicing recently when the embroidery guide decided it was going to go side to side but not back and forth. I also had to have the extension device which also holds the tools replaced becuse it broke. i now see that there are updates for your machines but I do not know wich I need or if I need any of them. i have noticed that when they replace parts they are Janome parts and appear to be of better and stronger quality. is there

am I right that the feed dogs do not drop on this machine?

Yes, this is correct....but you have to change the needle plate to a thicker one, so the feed dogs will be below the needle plate.

The memory card cannot be over 128 mb. Also the files need to be .jef format and stored in an emb folder on the card. I hope this helps.

SOURCE: Quilting on Janome MC 4000

I have a MC4000 and a manual. To raise or drop the feed dog, remove the accessory box and feel at the back of the free arm there is a lever that will slide left or right to raise or lower the feed dog. I am not a quilter, but the manual says to use foot A (zigzag foot) and accessory L (quilter) which appears to be a guide. Cheers, Deb, Townsville, Australia

SOURCE: quilting

Janome now has a darning foot ie it looks like an embroidery foot with a spring designed for the 1600 models. It is metal with a ring where the needle goes down through it. I removed the plastic lens inside the ring and this seems to have resolved the problem.

I usually pull my threads to the top so I can see where they are and not getting tangled underneath.
There are several good groups on Yahoo groups which offer support for starting out on quilting

SOURCE: Needle Thread breaking after about 30 seconds of quilting

Are you threading it correctly? I've had this problem twice, the first few times the thread was wrapped around different items (below the spool holder and then around the needle) the other times I threaded it wrong. Double check that the machine is threaded correctly with the manual. I've missed a step here or there and it does make a difference.

Finding equivalent

I can't seem to find a decent picture of the Kenmore 385.16120200, but from the replacement parts that I can see, it may be close to this one:
http://content.janome.com/index.cfm/Machines/Sewing-Quilting/2212
Or maybe:
http://content.janome.com/index.cfm/Machines/Sewing-Quilting/Magnolia_7318
Janome is an excellent brand, and any Kenmore built by Janome is going to be just as good, but a little less expensive. However as the Kenmore sewing machine line seems to be hard to find even used, and if you are considering buying a Janome, I would highly recommend a few features to you:
Drop-in Bobbin, One-step Buttonhole, Automatic Needle Threader, and maybe (depending on your tastes and preferences) a few electronic features like Needle Up-down and Push Button Stitch Selection. If at all possible, go into a shop and try before you buy. Hope you find what you are looking for!

does it sew buttonholes both ways?

My Janome 6500 always buttonholes away from me, so when it starts, it sews the near bartack, then stitches backwards down the right hand side of the buttonhole. It then comes back with little straight stiches on other side and sews the zigzag backwards on the left side, then the far bar tack. I would have thought your Janome would do the same stitch sequence.

I have a 19500 Kenmore elite embroidery/sewing machine. What is the best format to download embroidery patterns from the internet,my machine? to use with

According to the manual, your machine does data transfers in the .SEW format, so this would be the best format for you to download embroidery patterns in. However, if you find a pattern you like that's only available in other formats, I'd suggest downloading it in however many formats are available and see which, and how many of them, you can read. Experimenting on this doesn't cost you a thing other than a little time and can bring some big rewards!

You may need to remove the shank shaft w/screw driver which is where the foot attaches to and replace it . I had a problem when I had to attach a ruffler foot. A little practice w.this can save you a lot of repair bills. Most Janome dealers can repair ths too. Kenmores are made by Janome.
