We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan, cooling fan, turntable, and/or inside light operation, too.

Details of our service are at our Web site, along with a video showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Feel free to contact me directly with your brand, full model number and symptoms.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Sharp r-530ek-t on pressing start does not turn light is on

The bottom door switch is defective, or its mount is loose, misaligned, or broken.

Replacing it's not a difficult DIY job.

The service manual is here. My help file on door switches is here.

FixYa doesn't notify me when there's a response, so if you have other questions, please contact me directly.

Try a hard reset first: Unplug the oven or turn off its breaker for a minute or so, then set the clock & try it again.

If it still fails, did the cooktop lights go out recently?

It may need circuit board repair, which is usually economical.

The touch panel has malfunctioned, Suggest replacing microwave unless you want to attempt repair. If so you will need a replacement touch panel for it.

Hi I have a new Kenmore microwave model 721.8503 - it is a month old and wont turn on.. I close the door and the light stays on and it wont work..the door is completely shut

It sounds like the light switch isn't being deactivated which is preventing the microwave from operating (a failsafe).
Look to see that the buttons inside the microwave (where the latches are inserted when you close the door) are actually being pressed.
They may be out of place, obstructed, or your latches on the door may be damaged.
If you don't see anything wrong, try pressing the buttons yourself (with a pen bottom) to see if the light goes off.

Exterior light is not working. The fan turns on, but the lights won't when the button is pressed.

Is the light bulb burnt out? Try replacing the light bulb and see what happens.

Microwave seems to turn on when door latch is opened

What's happening is you are activating one door switch a little before the other, and that is causing your light, fan, and turntable to come on. The plastic parts are not perfectly rigid, so they flex a little when you press the button, and that causes the lag to be more apparent. Even if you press the door open faster and look really close, you may notice the light, fan, and turntable coming on for a split second. That's perfectly normal. The relay on the control board must also be turned on before it will actually be cooking.
