Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

Hi, I am trying to uninstall Java but I keep receiving an error message "fatal error occurred during installation" and the items do not get removed. This is what I have done - I go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and there are two Java items 'Java(TM)6 Update 17' and 'Java(TM)6 Update 20', I clicked on both separately and the clicked 'Remove', I get asked if I'm sure I want to remove the item, I click yes and the error comes up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Perhaps you've recently attempted to uninstall without success or the source folder might have been deleted manually. Please check the "java" folder in the C: drive "Program Files" folder.
Well, if you like to uninstall the older version (updates), then open
the sun java home page,
download the latest version and run, you'll be asked whether you'd like to continue with a warning message saying all the older versions will be deleted. Just click "yes" the older version will be deleted and a new version will be replaced.
If you want to uninstall both the versions; you can use this tool
Microsoft Windows installer utility
Download and install this program, to to "Start" > "All Programs" > "Run Windows Install clean up utility" and follow the on screen instructions. From the menu, you'll be able to select whatever you want to uninstall from your computer. This is used when "Add/Remove programs" doesn't help.

You can also use another application called ccleaner from piriform.com (click here to download)
Download and install it, run the program and click "Tools" and highlight the item you want to uninstall and click "uninstall" .

If the problem persists after doing all these, please let me know so that I can give you another alternative.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FIxYa.

    Hi,

I have deleted all the java files and folders I could locate.

I downloaded ccleaner and it would allow me to do the action to
    uninstall the
java items, but the items remained on the list and remained in the
    Add/Remove
    Program list.

I also downloaded the latest version from the java website and tried
    to
install it and I received the message about deleting the older version
    and
clicked yes, but then it came up with another message stating "another
version of this product is already installed. installation of this
version cannot continue. to configure or remove the existing version of
this product, use add/remove programs on the control panel"

So I still have the java update items but because I have deleted so many
java files and not been able to reinstall the software,
I'm concerned that I now don't have what I need.

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Well, let's try again. first of all, delete all the Java entries from the Ccleaner tools menu lists. You can do it after highlighting the name and click "delete entry". After that, delete all the java files/folders from the following locations;

    {Note: Before you begin deleting, please close all the applications which are running with JavaRuntime, like media players, browsers, etc..}

    1. C:\Program Files\Common Files

    2. C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files

    3. C:\WINDOWS

Now run the Registry cleaner that comes with the Ccleaner.

Restart your computer and try installing Java again. If the problem persists, use this tool to update the java application... Java Ra click here to download.

Please Let me after you are done.

    Good luck.

Hello,

its a software error, and the java program is stuck to your system, it would be very difficult for it to remove from the add/remove program. This usually occurs on windows sometimes.

Therefore to remove the program, you have to delete its files manually.

Go to "My computer", click "Drive C:, check "Program Files" folder, you will see a list of your installed programs, look for "Java" folder, open the folder(s) and manually delete the files that are therein. Note that some files might refuse to delete, you can cut such files to your desktop and delete it from there.

After everything, you can do a windows update and the latest version of Java will automatically be installed on your computer. Or go to java.com and download another from there.

I hope this helps.

Good luck.

    Hi,

Thanks for your help. I did what you suggested and removed the Java, JRE and Sun folders and also did this in C:\Documents and
Settings\User|Application Data, however the items are still listed in the Add/Remove Programs list - does that mean I have missed a folder or file somewhere?

    Thanks again

    Hello,

I'm sorry I didn't respond to your comment, I didn't notice it until now.

Its not that you missed anything, the items are only listed there but the files as been deleted from your system. Try to uninstall if from your add/remove program and see if that will make any difference.

If it refuse to uninstall from the add/remove program, you can install a fresh java program on your system, and uninstall it from the add/remove program thereafter.

Keep trying to uninstall and it will certainly uninstall sooner or later. There are some stubborn files that needs persistent attempts before they can uninstall. Try uninstalling several times daily and it will uninstall.

    Good luck.

Java folder deleted from c: drive. and when trying to uninstall from control panel it shows that "fatal error during installation"

It seems like you may have deleted the Java folder before uninstalling it.
The OS is obviously upset about that.
Reinstall Java to correct the error and run CHKDSK/F to remove any loose files. Then uninstall Java if you need to.
Hope that helps.

Cannot install/uninstall Java

hi,
It is not necessary to install java in order to use java.
Just download java highest version, copy and paste the java software in the system drive(eg C:,D:,....), Then set path the java file.
Example, if you have the java file in your C drive, do the following steps

1. Goto start->Run-> type command. Command prompt(black screen) will open.
2. if it shows as C:> follow the steps, else Goto step 6.
3. set path="c:\Java file name"
4. type javac
5.after typing if u find compiler then Java is installed in your system.
6. Example... if it shows as F:> and if u have saved your file in C:, do the following.
7. cd..
8. cd..
9. cd C
10 .then it appears as C:>, follow from the step 3.

thank you.
