Question about PNY GeForce 8400 GS, PCI Video Card

1 Answer

Hello. I have a basic 2004-5 era COMPAQ SR1000V.

Hello. I have a basic 2004-5 era COMPAQ SR1000V. I have yet to reach the "novice" level as an operator ... so this simple PC is a good teacher for a retired guy.
Anyway, the on board Intel video device threw in the towel, so, as a replacement, I bought this 8400GS. It was one of only a few PCI cards and it was on sale for about 20 bucks. I like it! It has a DVI output.(not mentioned in the specs write-up. I think). I followed instructions to use only a single display... DVI
I purchased a Dell S2200W monitor; it was on sale, too. (Living solely on my pension chooses a lot of things for me)
Oh yeah, my problem is that I cannot use all of my display adjustments (some are "grayed-out") to establish colors that I prefer. Yes, nVidia's adjustments are fantastic. But --- Why are many of my monitor's color variances (including the "Auto Adjust") totally disabled?
Thanks for your time. Best wishes,
MC.
I'm running XP Pro.

I want to ask a few question first....Are you trying to adjust color settings on the monitor itself instead of through the Nvidia control panel?

Did you go to the Nvidia support site and download the latest drivers for that card setup?

When you download the latest drivers, part of the download package is an updated Nvidia Control Panel that is accessable by right clicking on the desktop and scrolling down the drop down menu and choosing "Nvidia Control Panel". In this control panel is where all the different color, contrast, gamma etc. settings are made as well as letting the machine or the software make the choices.

Below is the link to the Nvidia support site. I will try to locate the latest drivers for your card and put that link below. Just copy and paste the link below to the address bar of your internet browser and hit enter and it will take you right to it.

If need more guidance, just send me a message.

When you click on the link below or copy and paste, click on the download button, then click that you agree to the terms. A save window will come up, in the left pane click on the desktop icon and then click on the save button. This will save the file directly to the desktop. Simply doubleclick on the installer file and the program and drivers will install.

Where is the transmission stick located on the 2004 CTS

Hello Lillian.
Your CTS does not have a dipstick to check the level.
There is a procedure for checking it but it needs to be done by lifting the car high and level to access a plug on the side of the transmission.
Here is the procedure.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL CHECKING PROCEDURE

  1. Start the engine and allow the engine to idle until the transmission fluid normal operating temperature has been reached.
  2. Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through the gear ranges, pausing a few seconds in each range. Return the shift lever to the PARK range.
  3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. The vehicle must be level, with the engine running and the shift lever in the PARK range. CAUTION: The engine must be running when the transmission fluid fill plug is removed, or excessive fluid loss will occur. Transmission fluid may be hot. Since the actual fluid level is unknown, stand clear when removing the fill plug. Have a container ready to capture any lost fluid. Do not turn the engine off with the fill plug removed, as you can be injured by hot transmission fluid being expelled out of the oil fill opening.
If you would like further advise on this matter, please ask me here in a comment.
Thank you for using FixYa.

My 2004 honda pilots heater is not working . but the a/c is working.what could this be ?

First thing to check and the easiest to do yourself is check the coolant level...frequently low coolant levels will not allow flow through the heater core.
A faulty thermostat could be preventing the engine from reaching it's operating temperature.
Take care.

I need to replace my radiator is this a complicated procedure for me a novice?

Not at all its very basic With the engine cold remove the lower rad hose and drain the coolant {this can be recycled by straining it with a fine screen {panty hose works fine]remove the top hose and loosen the rad mounts.Make shure the ign is off and remove the rad cooling fan and ac bolts [if fitted].remove the thermostat and flush the system with a regular garden hose until its clean. You should replace the thermostat with a new one [only a couple of bucks but a must do on an older car]
fit the new rad [tip last off -first thing on]and connect the hoses refill and top up your coolant.Start your car and allow to reach normal working [let it idle until the rad fan cuts in and out a few times and hey presto yoy saved yourself money and repaired your own vehicle [well done]

1996 mazima will not start, installed new fuel pump and the check engine light will not come on.

At a basic level, cars do not start for two reasons: No/weak spark or no/weak fuel. That's why older cars 1960's and 1970's era, were so much easier to fix.
Computers control just about everythig nowadays, but the basic issue of spark and fuel remain. It's just harder to diagnose now. Bring it to a reputable shop, throwing parts at a problem gets costly, not to mention frustrating.

What is the worst case for bubbles in trans oil does it mean the pump is shot

The most common causes of bubbles in the transmission fluid are:
1. Fluid level too low
2. Fluid level too high

Other causes can be:
1. Using the incorrect ATF
2. A plugged transmission vent.

As I'm sure you are probably well aware, Rams of that era didn't have the most reliable automatic transmissions.

Trying to install intel 333mhz from same "era" ('98) that works fine in another computer. but in 4640, it hangs at "entering setup" screen

Check the machine to make sure if has a 333mhz operation level,,, and not like a 133 mhz. You can tell this on the model tag that shows the serial number and operation info.

When I get to level 15 it will let me upgrade my stats but won't let me pick a perk. The done choice is shadowed as if I'm not allowed to pick it so the game is basically over there.

To choose a perk, besides reaching a new level, you must also have certain amount of points in specific skills, for instance, for the Cyborg perk you must have level 14 and science 60% and Medicine 60%. Try reaching level 16 and you may see available perks for you to choose.
