Spooling problem: HP PC and HP Photosmart printer

I have a 4 year old HP Photosmart 3180 printer and a new HP Pavillion slim line pc with Windows 7. The printer worked okay for a couple of months, then abruptly stopped working. I tried all the standard fixes. I contacted HP. they said I need to take off the printer's Vista driver and put on Window's 7. I did that. Printer will print test pages (a lot of them) and copy, but it won't print spooled pages from the computer, either my docs or from the web. HP said to take Windows 7 driver off (with all its programs), and reinstall it, using their download. I did that. Same result. All wires are connected correctly. Printer is set as default printer. Actual printing function is working fine. Computer says printer is working fine. But I can't get my computer to spool documents, ie ''talk'' to my printer. How to fix?

    Yes, but now I have a new problem: Every time I turn on the HP printer, it prints a test page. I guess I could just leave it on but that seems like a waste of electricity.

I'm not to sure if you have done this step or not . The problem can be caused beacuse of the spooler service in windows 7 not working correctly. As a suggestion try disbaling the print spooler service and then print . See if the printer , prints the documents directly. when the service is disabled

In case the above problem doesnot solve the problems, the problem step helped me solve the problem on my printer hope it works for you aswell
In addition to the above steps, you may also do a System File Checker (SFC) scan on your computer. SFC tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue

3. At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

    It nice to know that you initial problem with the printer got resolved. Regarding the test page problem , someone has given me this workaround , i'm not sure if it would work ,but you can surely give it a try.

    Please follow exactly and IN ORDER.

    1. Turn off the printer and wait 10 seconds. Turn it on again

    2. Let the printer print the test page.

    3. After the test page is printed, disconnect the USB cable connecting
    the printer to your computer. DO NOT turn off the printer while
    disconnecting the USB cable.

    4. Place the test page on the scanner glass and press the SCAN button on
    the printer. The ON light will flash as the page is being scanned.

    5. Remove the test page when the ON light is steady.

    6. Finally, turn off the printer and wait another 10 seconds. Then turn
    it on again. No more printing test pages! Yay!

    (You may now reconnect the printer to your computer via the USB cable.)

Have you tried a cold re-boot on printer PC and router worth a try first then check all are on-line and communicating Can you use the PC without the Ethernet cable or a direct cable to the printer just to set it up (Re-set up).

Ps. my old HP is a pig at time but I never have to use the cable which is a good job as I can never find the thing...

It will not work on windows 7

You should not be having an issue. Make sure that you use the 64bit driver on the 64bit Windows 7, or the 32bit driver on the 32bit system. You can get the drivers here.

My HP 3180 printer/scanner will not scan. It will print. What can I do?

Go to and download the latest drivers for your scanner. When asked where to save the drivers, chose DESKTOP. Then you must go to CONTROL PANEL uninstall the old HP files. then go to your desktop and install the new drivers. This should take care of your problem as long as there insn't amechanical problem with your scanner.

Driver issues

Somewhere during the software install something went wrong. So every time you start the printer it thinks the drivers needs to be reinstalled & it finishes by installing its self again. Open the control panel & uninstall everything that the 3180 has installed on your PC including other perk programs bundled with the printer. Unplug the printer & Re-start the pc when finished.
Go to the link below & download HP's latest software for your 3180.
Follow the manual's instructions to the letter for re-installation.
When you finish the install re-start the Pc. Go back to the HP site above and click the link you see there to: Automatically check to see if the latest driver is installed correctly.
