Question about Teac Audio Players & Recorders

I have a TEAC Model AR-40S reel to reel deck. The take up reel side does not turn when I try to play a tape. However, when I remove the reel from it, it turns with no problems. What can I do?

Joe has given me good advice, but he must be offline now. Can someone else tell me if a novice can replace the belt on my TEAC reel to reel deck (A-4010S) and where do I get the belt?

    Thank you, Joe and Eyecue!

Most of the decks like that are belt driven. The belts stretch and loose tension over time and what you are experiencing happens. Try this site:

Hello. The belt that drives that reel is worn and stretched. This explains why it seems to work when there is no load but when there is resistance it does not. The fix is to replace that belt. J.

This makes sense, Joe! Can I do that? Where would I get the belt and is it difficult for a novice to repair?

Why don't tape decks play?

If your X-10 has a separate drive motor for the capstan , it could be weak and in need of replacement.

The C-3X could have belt drive and the belts could be weak and in need of replacement.

I need a schematic for Teak reel to reel tape recorder model AR 40S

It comes with the service manual. Stereomanuals.com is the best place to buy them. The E bay manuals are usually junk unless you get an original with all the pages.

FF problem on Teac Reel to Reel

You need new brake pads installed as the ones in there now are dried up and may have fallen off. This is very common with older decks or 30-40 years old.
I am still working on these decks at Skywave Tape Deck Repair in the Chicago area.

Teac a-3440 will not play

Hi Gary,
This makes me think the Capstan Shaft is not turning either due to a broken or stretched belt or that the capstan motor itself has stopped working. This may be a job for a Technician. You first determine if the Capstan is turning or not- this is the metal post that contacts the Pinch Roller that rotates and is the way the deck gets it's speed regulation. If it is not turning look inside the deck from the side to see if the flywheel is turning and that the belt is on that flywheel. Lastly make sure the capstan motor is turning.
Beyond that a Tech may have to take over from there. I am in the Chicago area and can repair it if you are close. Many people send me units from all over the USA anyway.
My name is Sam. I operate Skywave Tape Deck Repair

Music playing backwards

Well, not being there to try some diagnostics, there can be a number of reason that the tape plays backwards at times. One reason is that the tapes are 4 channel discrete tape requiring a 4 track 4 channel deck- this would mean track 2,4 are recorded in the forward direction. A Stereo (2 channel 4 track deck) play tracks 2,4 in the opposite direction. That is why you turn the tape over on some decks. Other possibilities could be tape path skew, that reverse relay is NOT changing the head that "listens: to the tape and that is just the start of what it could be. When a new person starts to use a deck of such age- it can be correct to assume that the deck is not working in some respect. A Tape deck Technician such as myself would know how to determine if the deck was working correct or not and know and have parts to correct it. I worked in the Factory Service in Chicago for Teac and actually have one coming into my shop in the near future. After 40 years of working on these I am still at it. I am sorry there may not be an easy answer to this.

I have a teac 3340 reel to reel recorder and believe it can only function in 2 speeds 7 1/2 ips and 15 ips. I have many reel to reel recordings that are 3 3/4 ips. Is there an adapter or gadget I can use...

In short, no. if you look closely you will see the Teac 3340 has a much larger/thicker capstan shaft than other Teac reel decks. This feature allows the faster tape speeds...7 1/2 and 15 ips. In order to slow down the Teac 3340 you would have to change the flywheel to one from another deck that was made to run at 3 3/4 and 7 1/2. Which is possible but some work..plus you would have to find a slower speed flywheel from another Teac deck. Also to maintain performance, the bias and Eq positions for the slower speeds would have to be readjusted from 7 1/2 and 15.

My Teac 4070G reel to reel tape deck rewind and fast forward functions work, but the play function does not. Any ideas? Could it be a circuit?

Without actually seeing your Teac reel deck, i suggest you verify that all fuzes in the deck are good..not blown. Also with a tape correctly installed..ensure that left and right tape tension arms are held under tension/ closed by tape tension, also ensure the capstan shaft is rotating... look in back to ensure the capstan drive motor is running.. if yes, and tape still will not play... problem could be a stuck/failed solenoid, dirty or corroded push buttons, or corrosion on contacts where rear circuit boards/plugs insert into other boards.
