Question about Nikon Speedlight SB-600 TTL Flash

2 Answers

I have a Nikon SB-600. It will not zoom; it is stuck on 14mm. it will not zoom manually or when I zoom my lens. It worked perfectly yesterday morning, but quit working by the PM. It was not dropped or damaged in any way. I tried re-setting it using the power and mode buttons, but had no luck. It still fires at 14mm and will increase and decrease intensity, but the zoom won't work. Any ideas?

Push the cap over the flash head down. When the cap is over the flash it stays at 14mm

Perhaps it's sensing that the diffuser is out. because if the diffuser is out, the flash will not zoom (at least it was like this with the SB-80DX)

The lens is a manual focus lens. It doesn't matter which mode you have the camera in, you'll still have to focus it yourself.

The zoom on the sb600 wont adjust accordingly to the zoom of my lens

Three things come to mind.
First, make sure that you are in fully automatic mode - easily done by reset (holding down "Mode" and "On/Off" at the same time. If you hit the "zoom" button it takes it out of automatic zoom and cycles through manual zoom settings until you get to auto again.
Second - make sure the camera is in an auto mode - manual mode could stop it from zooming.
Third - make sure that you don't have the diffuser pulled down. That can keep it from zooming also.
Good luck!

You could use flash. Depending on distance, you might want to go with one of Nikon's add on flash units. SB-600 is very cost effective.

You could also buy the excellent f1.8 50mm lens that Nikon makes. It's about $120 new. It's a prime lens (no zoom/telephoto) but it is one of the best lenses Nikon makes. It works very well in low light. There are also some other large aperature lenses, but cost goes up as f goes down!

SB-600 Power Zoom stuck at 14mm

I struggled with this one but then, on the basis that if all else fails read the manual I found the answer. It's soooo simple. The wide-flash adapter is set. That's the little pull-out screen at the top of the flash which folds down over the flash-head. If it's pulled forward it activates the wide angle setting automatically. Push it back in and you'll be fine. tony k

Zoom range 14-17mm

make sure the diffusion dome and the built in wide angle adaptor are off. If the diffusion dome is on, it will only work as 14mm and 17mm without the diffuser but with the wide angle panel.

Noise while zooming with sb-600

sb-600/800 make a distinct motor-spinning noise when zooming, this is normal. Any grinding/clicking noises are not normal.
