Yesterday my cell phone stop receiving a signal and "SOS" started registering in the signal bar. I called southernlinc and they told me that i needed to put my sim card into another phone. unaware that it could not be another blackberry, i put it into my uncle blackberry and his phone started registering the same message "sos".
So for short putting my sim card into another blackberry made it start having the same problem my blackberry. Both of our sim cards work fine in other cell phones but will not register with our blackberrys

Let me ask one question so that we can narrow down the measures to be taken. Have you tried another Sim Card on your Cell Phone? If not, please do it now and let me know. It's also possible that there's problem with the voltage of your sim card and your handset, so you need to check the sim card first. If inserting another sim card has the same problem, then the problem is with the handset, must be hardware [i hope you haven't activated flight mode or offline mode from your profile].

To do it yourself, you'll need alcohol/acetone/spirit, a small soft brush, a set of screwdrivers, soldering iron, soldering paste, soldering wire..etc..,. First of all, please, open the battery compartment, remove the battery, sim card, and wet the brush with acetone/alcohol/spirit clean the sim connector thoroughly. After it's dried, insert the sim card, battery... and power on the mobile, and check the status, if the problem persists, you need to open it apart and check the sim card connector on the board. So, I would like to let you know that it's not safe if you are not sure and don't know what is the sim connector, rather I would suggest you to take it to a mobile repairing shop or to a service center and get it repaired. It's also possible that the sim ic is the culprit, not the sim card, but need not to worry, sim ic can be replaced or can be jumpered. It's upto you now, and if you open it apart, clean the sim card connector from the inside and check while you clean step by step, also look for any loosen connector/pin, solder if necessary

I could only wish you good luck for now.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Thanks for the information. However, before i proceed to do all of this, let me make sure that u understand completely. After i got the message on my blackberry, i put my sim card into a relative's blackberry and it made their blackberry do the same identical thing. just by putting my sim card into his phone. It does not seem that that would be the case if it was the card connector

Most times when a phone displays insert Sim card, it means that either the Sim card is damaged or the Sim tray on the phone that allows the sim card to display on the phone is damaged and will need to be replayed .

To check if the Sim card still works,You can check Sim card with another phone, to confirm if the Sim card is working.

Take care.

Hi,if after you have tried all i said you should do, and it did not work,That means the phone you are using is not yet accepting Sim card because it is block and it is not yet registered to work with the Sim yet that's why the Sim card can work.

The only way you can use the Sim card o the phone is to Unlock the phone (The same has registering the phone to work with the Sim card).

After you've unlock the phone , the Sim card will now work with phone.

    UNLOCK

the truth is that you can unlock the phone ,but you can't unlock all phone for free.

The payment sites are very cheap you could try it out and see.

You can the link below to unlock .

Note: unlock is not free, You will be charged to get your unlock code.

The only way by which you can get the unlock code for free is by calling your service provider

and requesting for your unlock code.

If you service provider refuses to give it to you, then there is no other place where you can

    get a free unlock code.

Visit the link below if you are interested in buying the unlock code:

    Good luck.

Hi , why the phone is not working with the Sim card is because the Sim card doesn't have access to work with the phone yet.In other to make the phone work with the Sim card, you will need to unlock the phone.Unlocking the phone will make the SOS go out from the phone and no more invalid Sim card.

Hi,

There could be many reasons for the same. Usually ,it refers to a Bad Sim.However, as your Sim worked well with a regular cell, that eliminate this cause.

Now,left with few more causes :-

1. Is your Phone Locked? Each cell in US / UK is usually allocated for a particular carrier. In case, if you are using the incorrect Sim in your cellphone, it would not work. All locked cellphones would give you this message.

2. Signal - The frequency of every cellphone is different. This message would be there, if the signal is too weak or low. Have you tried to change the settings to manual or auto or try to take this cell to another place and see, if you could see some more signal bars.

3. Firmware problem - Uncommon, but yes, could cause the same effect. You could try to update the firmware and make sure you have the latest version installed.

4. Hardware failure - Possible. Few IC's may blown out that could cause an interruption in electronic signals.

The causes could be many. But, i have already mentioned the main causes with this blackberry cell.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

I have an idea. Try some other SIM in your phone. I am sure that would work. If yes, there is an issue with your SIM. I agree that it worked on other cellphone. However, if it does not work on 2 Blackberry's, there is a concern, might be a problem from Service Provider's side.

    Let me know,once done.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice
    day!!

My phone is not reading my sim card, i have at&t service. with a data plan enabled. the signal bar says "SOS" and i can only make emergency calls. how can i fix this?

Hello,
If you have pulled the sim card out and verified by the diagram on the phone that you put it in properly, you may have a "burnt" sim chip, unless you have tried it in another phone with success. Burnt chips can happen for a number of reasons, some of which could be physical damage. You will need to go to a cell phone kiosk or store and purchase and activate a new one. They usually cost about $25. They would be able to tell you if something was wrong with the sim as well as they should have a sim reader on hand.

I have the blackberry 8120 and its constantly saying sos, meaning no signal. I have tried everything to fix it, turning off/on, taking battery out, taking sim card out, alt+caps+del. and nothing has worked

Did you check your SIM in any other mobile phone. If it doesn't work there then you need to replace the SIM with new one.
If it works in other phone then there might be problem either in SIM jack (It needs to press the SIM and make contact with the terminals in phone. So, put some piece of paper on the upper side of the SIM and reinsert it). If it works with this situation then you need to proper the jack of sim holder.

The other condition is to Reset the phone. Sometimes, it solves the issue.

So, Goodluck

My samsung A437 reads insert sim card ans sos. The sim card is in there and we know it works since it can be used in other phones

Then I would try a Master Reset on the phone.

To accomplish that enter *2767*3855# as if you were entering a phone number. This will reset all settings to default, but leave all data untouched.
