Question about Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console

1 Answer

PS2 (fatty Model) Does not power on

PS2 (fatty Model) Simply stopped switching/powering on. Does not power on when plugged in even at dealers. No Power cord fuse on plug. Local SONY dealers say that since item is no longer under warranty they cannot replace unit. However they can offer a 50% rebate (approx. €70) off a PS2 slim model since and as long as warranty seal is still intact. If we try to get it opened and fixed anywhere else, the deal is no longer available. Slim unit will have a warranty period of 12 mths compared to teh standard legal 24 mth period!!!

Any idea what could have gone wrong and if it could be worth it to try risking fixing it? Once warranty seal is broken/damaged the rebate-replacement deal is off. Could it be the internal power supply unit or is there a power fuse before the psu that could have blown up perhaps?
any ideas welcome. thks

No! absolutely do NOT open the PS2. You will make a huge mistake especially since you dont know what to look for. Besided, if someone here tells you it is one thing, how do they know for sure? Just go with the Warranty.

is either the power cord plugged in all the way in back of the system, or is the switch on the back turned to on. This may work for ps2 non slim.

I have a scph-75001 model ps2 and i need a power supply the back of the ps2 says d/c 8.5v but all 8.5v suppys seem to be a/c 8.5v what to do? will the a/c supply work even tho it says d/c?

Picking a replacement power supply is tricky if you don't know the process, and the exact specs of the supply you are trying to replace. You would be much better off just buying one listed for your model PS2, like this one:

http://store.richspsxparts.com/acadfor70slp.html

Brand new power supply for $16.95 and usually ships the next day. Something like this you would have no chance of damaging your unit.

No power to console. Played one night all okay turned on next day and nnothing happened, no green light or anything

Hi Lisa.

There are a number of things that could cause this, but we know its a power issue so the possibilities are...

Note: Since we know this is a power fault be extremely careful around electical wires and plug sockets

1. First make sure its not the socket and try plugging in the console somewhere different. And check all the connections on the power lead.

2. The fuse at the could have blown (I would check this first) however this is most likely not the case if the power pack (the big black box thing in the middle of the power cable is warm as this means power is getting through.

3. If you know a friend with a PS2 try using their power cable to establish wether or not yours is faulty, if it works simply buy a new cable.

4. If all the above fail, the problem is internal in the PS2 and you will have to take it to a qualified repair person.

If the fuse is blown it will need replacing make sure you get the right amp fuse and simply replace. You can

Ps2 powers up, but disc is not spinning and

Following could be the reasons for not spinning any PS2 disc:
  • A dirty laser. Try cleaning the laser and see if it helps. If you can see crust or dust covering the laser eye, it may not be strong enough to read anything at all. If the laser looks clean, this is probably not the issue.
WATCH this video to clean lens

  • An unplugged laser cable. These things normally do not come out by themselves, but if you opened the ps2 that was spinning OK to clean the laser and/or removed the laser to clean it, plugged it in, now it's spinning 1/2 of a turn, the laser cable may not be in securely. If it is in securely, make sure it is plugged into the motherboard end properly.
  • A dead laser. On models 30001, 35001, and some 30001R, this is the most likely issue. These models are old and the original lasers were a bit unreliable.

No Spin At All If your spindle hub is NOT SPINNING AT ALL, NOT EVEN 1/2 OF A TURN, it may be bad or unplugged. A tell tale sign of it being unplugged is if you hit eject, the laser moves down the rail, and starts grinding because the PS2 keeps trying to move it down the rail even though it hit the end. There's a small switch on the spindle hub that tells the unit to stop pushing the laser because it's reached the end. Spindle hubs usually do not go bad by themselves, usually either the PS2 too a bad fall and it became bent [try spinning it by hand], or someone the cable out and put it in too many times [or incorrectly] and the silver contacts on the cable were detached.

The on/off switch won't turn on. i have power on (red light) switch clicks but no green light. i have taken lid off and white button seams on work but still no green light. i have even held down little...

This is one of three things. Unfortunately, it's difficult to determine which, unless you start replacing parts.

1. Bad switch. The switch doesn't usually go bad by itself, has the PS2 been dropped? Bumped? Anyone push the switch too hard? It's held in by solder on all 4 corners. If the solder becomes dislodged, the switch can fail.

2. Bad cable. This is rare unless someone opened the PS2 and removed/installed the cable a few times and frayed the internal wires.

3. Bad motherboard. Sometimes a power problem can develop, or the motherboard can short out. It's pretty rare, but I have seen it happen.

4. Bad AC adapter. Recent power surge? It's possible that the AC adapter is delivering enough voltage to power the standby light, but not enough to power the actual system on. You can easily check this by plugged your PS2 up on someone else's AC adapter or taking your AC adapter to someone else's PS2.

You can find parts at the following page:

Quite often the power plug/socket/jack in the back of the PS2 slim console (YELLOW), Can become loose on the main board, or cracked, or simply internaly slack.
This will cause no power or intermittant power.

You might try a friends ps2 power supply of the same type to make shure it isnt the ps2 that is broken. If the friends power supply works, get a working one from ebay or something.

Ps2 will power off

Hi 256Male

Look at the fan in the back and see if it is running. Souns like your PS2 is overheating. Sometimes so much dust and lint build up on the fan it stops. You will merely need to clean it up on the inside.
