You can unlock iPod in one of two ways: • Enter the combination code of 4 digit to unlock the iPod. If you enter wrong code combination, the digits onscreen flash red. • Or Connect iPod to the main computer you use (computer with which iPod synced with), and open iTunes. Now disconnect the iPod from the computer, it will be unlocked.
restore your ipod, it will solve the problem. Here is the REAL solution. Ending ipodservice.exe will NOT WORK.
1) Plug your ipod into the computer using firewire or USB.
2) Open MY COMPUTER
3) Wait until the ipod shows up as a drive letter
4) Right click on the ipod drive letter and do a ' quick format ' (Now the ipod is just a plain windows hard drive)
5) When it is complete, run the ipod updater and do a Restore. This puts the ipod software back onto it
6) Remove the ipod from the usb or firewire port, plug it into the wall power supply and allow it to finish the update
I had the same problem. And I coudn't remember my SCREEN LOCK Password as your son. So what I did was I just disconnecteed my IPOD while it was connected to itunes without properly ejecting. This method doesn't retrieve or resets the password, it justs opens your ipod out of the screen lock. so your son can hear his music as usual until he can get a password retreive helper.
Eep... Maybe not the solution you're looking for, but the only one I can think of would be to run a restore through iTunes. If you need help with that, check out the following link:

Good luck! And next round, punch in a code of your own.
