If the Geek Squad came out to transfer your data for you they should guarantee their work. Call them back and have them show you how to access it.

Was the Geek Squad's disc being detected? Or did you just take them your disc to see if they could get a computer to recognize it? If not, then you may just need to change some settings at Boot for your computer to start booting from your restore disc. I've never personally dealt with the Geek Squad, but I would not just take their word for something. I've had several people very unhappy with the outcome of letting them service their computers. I've talked to other people who were very happy with the Geek Squad service. Try taking your disc to a local computer shop and ask them if they can put the disc in their computer to see if it is a functioning Restore Disc. MADHATTER COMPUTERS

You could replace the motor board for less than $100 but I think the geek squad says the motor board is bad on every computer that doesn't start right up for them so I would have someone else look at it first. Or just get a new computer at walmart for like $300

Laptop hard drive

You can restore your computer to its original glory (once a new Hard Disk Drive is installed) using the original Operating System (OS) disk that came with the computer (applicable to Gateway, Toshiba, Dell laptops; other brands make you "burn" a copy on your own). I call this the "oops disk" because it restores the computer software back to factory default. If you got the laptop second hand or don't remember which buried box in the asthmatic attic has those old CD/DVD's - then you can do one of the following:
A. Contact the manufacturer to obtain a new set of "Restore" or "Recovery" disk(s). They will charge small Fee + Ship/Handling. [Tell "Sylvester" from Bangladesh "Hello!"]
B. Purchase a legal copy of an operating system (XP or Vista) from a local retailer (such as Best Buy) and install it [or hire a Geek Squad Agent to install it for you - much faster, less headache!]
C. Grab opportunity by the horns and steer into a fun project of installing an open-source (free) Linux-based OS such as Ubuntu or similar. [Happy learning!]
D. RECYCLE the computer and buy a brand new one, complete with operating system and manufacturer's warranty. ["OOOO, VISTA!"]
In ascending order of cost: C, A, B, D
In ascending order of time-investment and learning: D, A, B, C

HINT: if any or all of this solution sounds remotely confusing (e.g, you don't know how to install a HDD, etc) - hire someone to do it. I don't change my own oil because it's messy and less convenient. So, please support your local Geek Squad Agent and enjoy your free time!
