Question about Hayward SAND FILTER, PRO SERIES

1 Answer

I have a Hayward s200 sand filter. I run it all the time mainly for about 10-12 hrs a day and my water still doesn't clear up. People keep mentioning the filter isn't working properly. And i notice a orangish tan colored substance on the pool floor. It seems to only be around the returns area. My thought is sand is that correct? and also when the pump is off and air is introduced to the lines when i turn it back on sometimes u'll see a orangish cloud come from the jets as it pumps out the air from the lines. Please tell me what the problem is and how to fix it.

1.If you don't have your manual, download one here :http://www.haywardnet.com/products/manuals/pdfs/manual23.pdf
2. Read the manual.
3. The orange substance is usually iron oxide (rust). Normally you should have no steel in your plumbing system, only brass or plastic. Be sure to check that nothing has been changed, bolts, valves etc. Be sure nothing on the pump has been changed to introduce steel.
4. If you haven't every cleaned your filter, do so. This should be done 1-2 times per season. You can buy some material at any pool supply. Have you ever changed your sand? If so use only good quality pool filter sand NOT REGULAR SAND. If you've had the filter apart before, check that all piping is as shown in the diagram in manual.
5. Have pool water tested at your local pool supply co. They can tell if there are metals. There are some chemcials that can help remove metals.
It is also possible that you have disolved solids that are too small for the filter to remove. There are floculants that you can add to help settle these. You'd add the floc, run pump short time and then turn off letting solids settle to bottom. See your local pool supply co, they can give you all the ifo you need.

SOURCE: I have a Hayward s200 sand filter. I run it all

There should be no air getting into the lines .. bleed the air out of the filter, see if there is air getting into the filter thru the pump, this will give you poor circulation . If you are loosing water , then you may have a leak in the return pipe ,, Sand is not usually orange .. but soil around the pipes may be if you are in the southwest

Why does the filter basket never seem to catch anything and it never reads to need to be backwashed...but the water is still not clear....what are we doing wrong?

Because of the size of the filter - 18", I would presume this is an above ground pool?

  • Do you have a skimmer?
    • If so, put some leaves, larger organic debris, etc. into the skimmer. They should end up in the basket of the Hair & Lint Pot!
    • That would prove your question to be either working or not.
  • If you don't have a skimmer, then you have a suction port in your pool.
    • Let that suction port suck some larger debris that would stay in the basket. Again, you will prove or disprove, whether debris is getting to your pump basket (Hair & Lint Pot Basket).
How long has your pump & filter been operating?
How long do you let your pump & filter run per day?
  • It should run at least 8 hrs per day.
  • If cloudy, you should run continuously until clear.
How long has your water been turbid/cloudy?
  • Use a clarifier, Natural preferred, like SeaKlear, daily at recommended dosage, until clear
What is the pressure?
Are you saying that it is the same pressure as Day 1, has not climbed at all?
What do you mean: Does not read that backwash is needed?
What in your understanding is: "Time to backwash the filter"?

You should know the "Starting Pressure" of your Sand Filter!
  • When sand is absolutely clean & free of any grime and sticky residue.
    • Just added media, when just installed is the best time to make a note of the starting pressure on a working pressure gauge.
  • When the pressure rises 8-10 lbs. over starting, time to backwash!

Hayward s200 losing suction in filter mode

Based on your question, it appears you have a Hayward S200 sand filter with 6-position side mounted valve and a standard pump with a first stage basket with a Lexan sight cover. You indicate that 5 of the six valve positions appear to work properly, drawing water out of the skimmer line, through the valve, and into the appropriate output (such as waste, recycle, backwash, etc.), but that in the normal filter mode your pump runs but no water is drawn from the skimmer through the pump basket.

What you describe is a classic blockage downstream of the pump. First, check to verify any/all downstream valves are in open position. If the filter will operate in backwash mode, it is likely not a blockage within the filter. I suggest you disassemble the 6 position valve and check for any obstruction within the valve itself. Based on your description, it's possible the obstruction might be in the bottom line going to the filter. This line narrows as it approaches the valve, and in normal filter mode an obstruction in this line could log and clog the water path, but in backwash mode water flows away from the valve toward the filter in this line, away from narrow to larger diameter. It's a long shot.

Do you have a strong flow of water back to pool? If so, perhaps pressure gauge is defective, pool water is relatively clean or particles are too fine to be captured except through multiple turnovers.

Trying to open pool for my first time....not sure what to turn valves to so water will run into the filter from pool

red valve handles align with flow of water long ways the tail in direction of pipe valves open to open pool generally all Valves open Main drain (floor of pool). Skimmer square hole somewhere on side edge of pool... There could be a third Valve for a seperate Vacuming port (like mine) it can be either its below water line .. On the Round Sand filter theres a Multi port Valve I usually start the Filter in RECIRC mode .. While I net and gather debris then I add floculant leave on recirc two hours . Then Shut ALL down for 12 Hrs while all the algae and debris sinks to bottom . Water will be reasonably clear.. Make sure pools Extra full , And Vacum all on bottom on waste setting

I'm getting a little sand into the pool from the return line from my Hayward s200 filter and the water won't clear up? Where can it enter the return??

There is a tiny hose inthe filter ... it is probably stuck in the sand and is sypohoning the sand into your body of water through venturi effect. Get the tiny hose free and your sand problem will clear itself up

Is your system running at least 8 hours a day ... should run 12 if a home system ... most states require 24 hour operation for commercial pools ...

Try consulting the owners manual for these pool filters. It will give you a lot of info in the settings that your filter needs to be on to do specific tasks. I really think that it will help you get this straightened out.

Are you using the rinse setting for a few seconds following the backwash? If not, once you finish washing, stop the pump, change the valce to rinse, then run it about 3 to 5 seconds. Shut down then switch to filter and the particles should stop coming back to the pool.
