Question about GIMP GNU Image Manipulation Program

1 Answer

Gimp Just stops working!

Gimp is a really cool tool don't get me wrong, but for some reason once i have been logged in for about 10minutes everything ceases to be click-able. I can still minimize and maximize but all the images and icons (tools) don't function anymore plus I can't close the program. Anybody know how to fix this?
Thanks

Gimp is an open source free program and certainly it will contain bugs like in your case.

You can help to report it to http://www.gimp.org/ so that the guys over can improve on it. They need your feedback for further improvement of the programs.

Appreciate if you oblige

Thanks

Why when I unistall gimp it's don't completely unistall/

When you uninstall, the GIMP's directory in USER>Gimp (version#) is not erased in case you reinstall and want all your brushes and such back.
To completely uninstall GIMP, you have to delete that folder after you uninstall the software. (To get to that folder, you can go to C Drive> Users> USER> gimp (version #). )

Electric mower will quit after mowing for 10minutes. checked the extension chords and everything is plugged in.

I don't know what model or brand this is but once you make sure you have power at the end of the cord (bring something else to plug in to test it.) My next thought would be the switch. This seems to be the first to go on some of these. Look at the housing and see if it is cracked or distorted. Post brand and model # also.

My tool options box has detached from my toolbox on GNU GIMP 2.6. How do I get it to re attach?

Grab the word or line under the title bar of the tool options box (it'll say "Paintbrush" or "Eraser" or whatever tool you have currently selected) and drag it onto the docking area at the bottom of the toolbox.

For full details, see http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-concepts-docks.html

I wanna download a safe photo editor on my laptop, im a new user pls help

if you want a really serious free photo editor then GIMP is the best one out there (it just keeps getting better) .. it does everything a pro might need but its a bit daunting for a beginner .. if you want a much simpler but still good editor then "paint.net" works nicely ... there are many others so here is a site that lists some
http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pixelbasedwin/tp/freephotoedw.htm
if you are willing to pay then photoshop elements is a good starting point .. photoshop CS4 has some really nice features but is expensive .. a business that needs high productivity would benefit from CS4..

Cut image and transfer to transparent background using gimp

Hi Jody,

Gimp can be frustrating, but it's one of the most amazing and powerful free applications out there. You're right...what you're trying to do is very simple, but you need to know a few tricks to get it to work well.

First, you need to use .PNG as .JPG files don't support transparency. When you try to save a file in .JPG that has a transparency, or alpha, channel, you should be prompted to "export" the image by flattening all layers, which essentially replaces all the transparent areas with the current background color (usually white).

Second, there's a tool that's been added to the most recent versions of the Gimp that does exactly what you want to do. It's called the "Foreground Select Tool" and is really simple to use once you get the hang of it. This tool was added in Gimp 2.4, so you'll need at least that version or higher to use it. This tool uses a two-step process: first you draw a rough circle around the object you want to cut out (your daughter), then you "paint" over the foreground object so the tool can sample all the colors you're wanting to extract. This sounds strange until you do it...once you understand, it's really pretty simple. You can read the docs for this tool here. There's also a YouTube video that shows the basic process. Apparently no sound on that video, but at least you can see what to do.

Not sure what was happening when you tried to use the scissors. There are so many variables, it's hard to tell. You probably didn't need the extra step of adding a transparent layer...when you had your selection copied to the clipboard, you could have used "paste into" or "paste as new layer" or "paste as new image" to get what you want.

Let me know if this doesn't answser your question.
