I hooked up my Sennheiser ME66 with K6 module (shotgun mic) to my Canon XH A1S and it didn't pick up any sound. I thought i put it on the right settings but obviously it didnt work. Is there a specific setting or something i have to do to get it to pick up?

I can help you set your Sennheiser ME66 shotgun mic up with your Canon XHA1S HD Camcorder.

To troubleshoot your mic problem, follow these steps:

  1. Check that your K6 is turned on.
  2. Plug it into CH1 XLR terminal on the camera.
  3. Press MENU on your camera.
  4. Select AUDIO SETUP.
  5. Select CH1 INPUT.
  6. Select XLR MIC.
  7. Supply your ME66 with phantom power by switching the +48V switch (next to the XLR jacks) to ON.
  8. Set the microphone attenuator to off (above the XLR jacks.)
  9. Manually adjust the audio recording level so the the audio level meter only occasionally goes to the right of the '12' mark on the side panel's audio level meter by plugging in headphones, setting the AUDIO LEVEL switch (top of camera) to 'M' and adjusting the AUDIO CH1 INPUT dial (camera side).

That should get you recording!

I hope that helps.

Manual above. and below, so you can check it all out.

I see in the documentation that this microphone needs a Power unit, I suspect, that the input to your camera is NOT compatible, with this mic, you need a Voltage to "Drive" this Mic, the camera may not supply the correct, any? Voltage to do the job.
please check, the Mic, spec's against the Camera's to ensure complete compatibility .

The Canon XH A1S has phantom power that should supply the mic, i also have to K6 power module that accepts phantom power and still nothing. I think that maybe there is a setting it should be on but i cant find any information in the manual that goes beyond setting the channel.

Most likely there is a broken wire inside the mic. You'll have to disassemble it to fix it, and it's not what I would call an easy job. Get a tech to help you, if you can. Chances are that it's just a wire that's broken and needs resoldering.
Also, on the following page, they talk about determining whether the problem is with the mic or headset, which should always be done first.
Sennheiser recommends sending it in for repair, and here's their site:

Good luck, and hope this helps.

No sound pickup

For a mic like sennheiser ME66\K6 prof.mic.you have two options.

What might cause the blinking of the light, might be the battery, cause it functions in two ways, either by battery or by phantom power that needs to be activated by +48v power phantom on your mixer before it can work properly .

So you will do is either you get a replacement of the battery on get a mixer that has +48v power phantom power.

Where can I find the mic that comes with the sony 250 and how much does it cost just for the mic?

The mic that came with the camera was very poor. Try a Sennheiser K6/ME64 (not ME66).

We have a Sennheiserew100 G2 mic kit with a wireless lav mic and transmitter we use for a canon xh-a1. The shotgun mic has been prefect but the lav mic is creating a static/noise in the background but then...

This is probably interference in the wireless connection for the lavalier mic.
Try switching channels to find a clear one!
Or switch to a wired lav mic if that's practical.

What setting do i use to run my cordles mic in to audio 1

Without more clarification I am assuming that you have the onboard mic plugged in normally & I don't know where the RF mic is connected.

First thing is that we know that you get sound from the shotgun mic in ch. 1. If you do not plan on using the onboard shotgun, then the fix is easy! Since it has been confirmed that ch. 1 works, just disconnect your shotgun & plug in the RF receiver to that, check your levels, and shoot away.

If you are still wanting to use that shotgun along with the RF, then I suggest that you re-read pages 51 - 54 of the instruction manual. You can find where to jack in, how to set, and change audio levels on these pages. Good Luck!

Microphone wiring for DV camera

on both xlr connection, you can see numbers on the plug from the out side and the inside. number 1,2 and three. 1 is for the ground, 2 for the hot wire and 3 is for the return, just match numbers. if you switch them, it will not work. just make sure one to one and so forth. good luck

Mic troubles

Most shotgun mikes are only going to provide a mono output. In some cases there are two internal pick ups and the output would be stereo. A good example of this would be the Audio Technica AT822 which almost looks like two mikes joined together. I have a Sennheiser MKE300 and I modified the plug in order for the signal to be fed to both channels (double mono) I'm not familiar with your Sony mike and I would think that it would feed both channels, either as stereo or double mono, but perhaps it is not designed to do so. And being a hot shoe connection it wouldn't be possible to alter it until the editing stage. However, having said all that, the other problems you describe indicate a faulty mike. The low signal level indicates a lack of power to the mike, which in your case should be provided by the camera (unless there is a place for a battery in the mike, but I doubt it). I don't think it should be tinny either. I have had some issues with my Sennheiser picking up too much camera noise and handling noise but the audio of the subject is quite good. So, if you want a suggestion ... Take the Sony mike back - if you can. Buy a good quality shotgun (not the Sennheiser MKE300!) that has a standard plug on it (XLR or 3.5mm). Buy an external recording device (I use a minidisc and/or an Edirol R-1) This will give you greater control over mike placement and provide redundancy ( I recently recorded a wedding with a broken mike cable -I didn't find out until the editing stage that the camera hadn't recorded usable audio)
