Question about Compaq Presario R3000 Notebook

4 Answers

I cant boot from the CD/DVD drive.

Despite selecting boot from cd-rom/dvd drive in the bios setup, saving changes and exiting, I cannot stop my laptop booting from the hard drive. I am trying to re-format and re-install the o/s from the recovery CD's (which I have saved to a DVD because the drive wont read CD's) in the hope that a fresh start might speed the old girl up.
Any suggetions would be appreciated.

Thank you myob247 for your suggestion, in the end I resolved the problem after discovering that the bios had a restore utility which clears all data and restiores the O/S to its initial factory supplied state. Press F2 on boot up to enter the bios, check that the Acer [D2D Recovery] in [Main] is [Enabled] exit and then restart Press F2 again (as if to enter bios) then ALT F10 together to enter the recovery utility. Follow the instructions and you should end up with a fresh start.

Although this has been semi resolved I have a feeling that the DVD wasnt actually a Bootable DVD. This is something over and above what a normal DVD burn is.

You would need to do a copy CD within the likes of nero. Or Clone CD etc as this would copy over all the files / settings needed to boot from.

Watch on the bottom of the screen when the PC is re-booting for a "Boot from CD" message, it may go by quickly, and hit any key to boot from the CD.

How do I unlock the Bios on an Acer ES-1 111M Laptop

To boot from a CD, DVD or USB device, make sure that the device has boot sequence priority over the hard drive.

BIOS Boot

BIOS (Basic Input Output Subsystem) is a programmable chip that controls how information is passed to various devices in the computer system. A typical method to access the BIOS settings screen is to press ESC, F1, F2, F8 or F10 during the boot sequence.
BIOS settings allow you to run a boot sequence from a floppy drive, a hard drive, a CD-ROM drive or an external device. You may configure the order that your computer searches these physical devices for the boot sequence.
The first device in the order list has the first boot priority. For example, to boot from a CD-ROM drive instead of a hard drive, place the CD-ROM drive ahead of the hard drive in priority.
Before you set boot priority for a USB device, plug the device into a USB port.
To specify the boot sequence:
  1. Start the computer and press ESC, F1, F2, F8 or F10 during the initial startup screen. Depending on the BIOS manufacturer, a menu may appear.
  2. Choose to enter BIOS setup. The BIOS setup utility page appears.
  3. Use the arrow keys to select the BOOT tab. System devices appear in order of priority.
  4. To give a CD or DVD drive boot sequence priority over the hard drive, move it to the first position in the list.
  5. To give a USB device boot sequence priority over the hard drive, do the following:
    • Move the hard drive device to the top of the boot sequence list.
    • Expand the hard drive device to display all hard drives.
    • Move the USB device to the top of the list of hard drives.
  6. Save and exit the BIOS setup utility.
  7. The computer will restart with the changed settings.

Boot Priority Options

Some computer manufacturers allow you to select the device that contains the boot sequence from a special device selection menu. The example below uses a Dell system board.
To set boot priority using a device selection menu:
  1. When the computer starts to boot up, after the manufacturer's ID screen, press F12 several times. The device selection menu appears.
  2. Use the up and down arrows to select CD-ROM or

I have a NP770Z7E-S01UB notebook. I can't get BIOS changes to stick so that I can boot from a CD.

Hi
BIOS changes are usually saved using the F10 key or going to the EXIT menu and using SAVE & EXIT. This is detailed on page 99 of the User Guide which you can download from here:-
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/201408/20140828134026815/Win8_Manual_eng.pdf
If you use the Esc key to leave the BIOS, your changes will not e saved.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

My ASUS Z99E laptop cannot access winXP

Try to access the BIOS "F2" Key, Go to the BOOT Section, set the 1st Boot device to DVD / CD Rom. Press "F10" Save and Exit. If it fails again, re-enter the BIOS. Then make sure the drive is set to IDE and not ACHI. press "F10" save and exit the BIOS. If that fails then select in the BIOS Load Setup Defaults, and re-select the boot device to DVD/ CD Rom.

If all fails, you have to open the side or bottom cover to remove the HDD - Hard Disk Drive, Connect it to a Stand alone pc via the SATA Cable or External Device (Works as USB) then you can either do an emergencey back-up, Format the drive through windows.

Hope it helps

Format aspire4736z

Hi there.

To format you will need:
Operating Systems (OS) CD/DVD

Steps:
1) Enter the BIOS when the laptop boots by pressing the Delete key repeatedly.
2) Once the BIOS is open locate the boot disk priority and set prioity 1 to the CD/DVD drive, set priority 2 to the laptop's hard drive.
3) Save changes to the BIOS and exit. The system should now reboot.
4) Insert your OS CD/DVD.
5) Press Enter when the system asks you if you want to boot from the CD/DVD.
6) The OS setup should now start, the first thing it will ask you to do is format your hard drive.
7) After you drive is formatted you can either continue with the setup and install a fresh copy of the OS or you can exit leaving the main drive clean.

How can i boot my dell studio from cdrom so i can reinsall from external drive?

Turn on the machine, press F12 once the Dell splash screen is displayed, the boot menu will show up. From the Boot Menu, use up-down arrow keys on the keyboard and highlight the CD/DVD/CD-RW and press Enter. You will see another menu, select "Boot from Cd-Rom" and press enter to select it. The system will boot up from the CD-Rom. Please note that this settings is only for one time boot, once the system is restarted, the boot sequence will be restored to the previous saved settings. If you wish to set it from the Bios, enter the Bios settings by hitting F2 or Delete (should be shown at the bottom of the Dell splash screen) while you see the Dell Splash Screen. In the Bios settings menu, go to Boot options and make the changes with the boot sequence.

Let me know if you need further help.

Good Luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Restart your computer.
Press <DEL> to enter BIOS SETUP.
Look for "Boot" options, and change the "Boot Order" to make the CD/DVD the _first_ boot-device.
Save/Exit from BIOS SETUP.
Boot from the CD/DVD drive.

HOW TO USE EMACHINES RECOVERY DISCS

Turn your computer on.
When you see "Press <BLAH> to enter BIOS SETUP mode", press the <BLAH> key.

Change the "boot-order" to select your CD/DVD drive as the "first" boot device.

Put the first recovery-disk into your CD/DVD drive.

Save-and-exit from BIOS SETUP.

Your computer will "boot" from the media in the CD/DVD drive, and thus will start the "recovery" process.

you can configure it on the bios settings of the unit itself (possibly F2 or F11)
Then go to boot sequence then look for the removable device.
Then save your settings and restart your laptop. It should be working now.
