Question about Garmin (010-00583-00) for nuvi 750/760/770

2 Answers

My Garmin will not charge in the car. I brought it in to charge it on the computer. It shows that it is attached to computer, but isn't charging.

Lee isn't answering my last questions. Perhaps he thought I was finished. But the Garmin 770 does seem to be charged by the computer, and it would not charge in my car or in my granddaughter's car.

It says copywrite 2009 - it was a Christmas gift in 2008.

Hi,
What is the exact model number and how long have you owned it? It sounds like either the charging circuitry in the unit or the battery is bad. You may want to consider changing the battery. If the unit is out of warranty repair costs usually run 99$. You can follow this link:

Thank you,

    Hi,
I would still need to know the model of it. usually in the upper corner of the unit on the front. If its 2 years old it may be the battery.
    Thank you,
    Lee

It is a 770. I thought I had told you that already. Sorry.

    Lee A. Jul 10, 2010

Well if you would like to try it first you can try to replace the battery as batteries usually last about 2-3 years depending on use so it could very likely be the battery. Here is a video of how to replace the video the 760 is just like your unit. If problem persists you would need it repaired.
    Thank you,
    Lee

It is charging on the computer after all. I don't know if it is holding the charge or not, but it seemed as though it charged up just now. It showed a picture of a battery 4/5ths full. Then I turned it off.

What would be the issue if it were only not charging in the car?

  • landyg Jul 10, 2010

Is there a small piece at the end of the car charger that could have come off so that the charger doesn't make contact with the car?

  • landyg Jul 10, 2010

    Hello - are you still there? I am waiting . . .

There could be a few reasons for it not charging in the car. Are you certain your car outlet is working? Also it won't charge if temperatures are too hot or too cold. The cable itself could be a factor.as well. It would take testing and a different cable to isolate where the problem is lying. If you feel inclined you can try a different cable as that could definitely be the issue. Also just to let you know it takes time to type answers so please try and be patient with us experts. I hope I have given you enough information please take a moment to accept/rate my solution as you should have found it helpful.
    Thank you,
    Lee

Actually i'm pretty sure I did answer your question. You may want to try and get a new power cord for the automobile. If that isn't it then the unit needs repair. I gave you plenty of helpful information and would hope I would get positive feedback/an accepted solution on your part. I had no problem assisting you further and have answered every question that you have asked,

    Lee,

I admit my questions were confused - I am still trying to understand what happened.

Only question not answered - Is there a part that could have come off the end of the car charger? If so, what would it look like, beyond small and round.

    Thanks, Landy

The charger or the battery is bad. Probably if both the car and the computer can't charge it, it needs a new battery. However, on older ones (i.e. 4 year old or so) the batteries are no longer available, and service is no longer available. It depends on the model.

It can cost $99 for the service, if you can get it from Garmin.

There are kits available that include the battery and the tools to do the battery replacemen, but only for certain models.

I think they built in battery osbsolescence in order to make their products that are new more attractive to buy.

Good luck on fixing this, if you can find parts for it.

My Garmin nuvi 265 was working fine until 2 weeks ago. We got a screen message saying that the XM traffic was not supported, and then noticed that the unit no longer could be charged using the car...

The traffic receiver is in the car charger cable. The charger should have a red light on if it is getting power. If the light is on and the unit is not charging and you have no traffic, the charger cable is bad. If the light is off, then either the fuse did not fix the problem, blew again, or is somehow not sitting properly in the charger. Another thing you can check is by using the unit in another vehicle. If it works fine there, then the charger is not making good contact with your vehicle outlet for some reason. You will probably have to buy a new traffic receiver charging cable.

I plugged the Garmin nuvi 3790 into my computer and the garmin devise does not come on or light up

Make sure the unit has been charged while in your car with cigarette lighter adapter. If the unit is charged, try connecting the usb cable directly to a usb port on your computer and not thru a usb hub. Then see if it shows up in my compute. When it does show up then go to the Garmin web site and register your product then install Garmin update. I am attaching a link to the Garmin site. Thanks for using FixYa

How do i charge my garmin by attaching via a usb cable to my mac

When you connect the satnav to a computer with a usb cable it automatically starts to charge. However it takes about 8 hours to charge compared to around 4 on a car charger.

Brand new Garmin Nuvi 1490 T out of the box. How do I charge it? The only devices in box were a car charger (my commute is 5 minutes daily) and a USB connector? Should I just plug the USB into my computer?...

Garmin satnavs come with a charge out of the box.
In some cases your device may have lost a charge during shelf life. In this case you can charge these units in three ways:
  1. Place unit on computer with USB cable for approximately 8-12 hours
  2. Place unit on Garmin specified AC adaptor for approximately 4-6 hours
  3. Place unit on 12V vehicle adaptor for approximately 4-6 hours.
Some cars continue to supply power to the cigarette lighter socket when turned off and others don't. If yours doesn't you can charge it from your computer. There's no indicator to show that it's charging or when it's charged. However when you disconnect the satnav from the computer and turn it on there's a battery state indicator which shows if it's fully charged or not.

I battery went dead. I have pluged it into my computer . It lights up and shows a picture of it attached to the computer and the word Garmin but it does not show it chargeing.

Please leave it to charge and after about 2 hours - check it.
The Garmins need an initial charge to run - it is not bypassed if dead. It will not run on adapter power.

If it will not charge in vehicle or home - the jack may be loose from the board - but more likely the battery has failed.

Garmin DOES repair for a flat fee - units that are OUT OF 1 year WARRNATY CLICK HERE.

I think your battery has failed, you will need to send the GPS back to Garmin for a new battery, the battery is not replaceable by the consumer, it requires special tools, if u don't have them u can destry the GPS

How to

You should be able to charge the unit from the computer by plugging in the USB cable that came with it. The unit should then turn on and show an icon of a GPS attached to a computer tower. It will charge while this occurs. If nothing happens when you do this, perhaps your USB cable is bad. Does the unit work normally otherwise?
