GE Microwave w/convection and grill Model JES1290 ML-01. Put popcorn into MW, set Popcorn Button. Approximately 1 minute, rumbling began and fire shot out from right side of interior. Immediately turned off, reset and tried again with same results. Bought February 23, 2007. What is likely problem? Will warranty cover?

Have the same problem with the same model JES1290SK. The unit started throwing sparks on defrost and just today started on fire using the popcorn function.

Is there any recall on this product as it is thoroughly UNSAFE?

Have the same problem on the GE JES1290SK. Started throwing sparks
often after 14 months of use during defrost use. Now started on fire
    during popcorn mode.

Product is thoroughly unsafe and GE engineers should be prosecuted for distributing this junk.

Is there any product recall or consumer fix for this? Please let me know.

On the phone with father , who has the same problem with the GE JES1290SK-01 model. I was trying to see if there was a recall on this product also. I let him know I found other people with the same problem.

He states it throws sparks out of the right side of the unit while in use so he quit using it.

We have found the problem to be the magnetron, an expensive part.

I would not use the oven like that! Take it in for service to at least know what happened. If it is under warranty this normaly should be at no cost. Some component probabably failed badly!

My Dacor DCM24 microwave/convection oven is brand new and won't pop popcorn--old or new, large or small bag, with twice as much time as is on the bag, power on high. Doesn't work with the popcorn button...

Are you cooking it this way, as shown in the owner's manual?

"Use an overturned 9 or 10 inch oven proof glass pie plate on top of the
turntable when popping bagged microwave popcorn.
"

You can also use a paper plate in a pinch, but as always, never leave a microwave unattended while it's cooking, since some paper products can have impurities which will allow overheating and possibly fire.

This is a convection oven, so it has a metal turntable tray.

Microwaves cannot penetrate the metal from below like it would on a standard microwave's glass tray, allowing for even heating.

If you've lost your owner's manual, you can get it here.

Hi! the problem you have mentioned indicates that your microwave magnetron is not working. check for busted fuses.

No homegrown popcorn in a microwave? why?

Popcorn is a food that has a very low moisture content, and microwave ovens rely on moisture content (water molecules) in order to cook.

If there is not enough moisture to absorb the microwave energy, much of the the energy is reflected back to the magnetron and damage it.

This is also what damages a microwave when it is run empty.

A simple solution is to add about 1/2 to 1 cup of water in a microwave-safe container in the back corner of the oven and cook your popcorn a little longer.

You'll have to experiment a few times to get the combination right for your particular model.

But allow our microwave about 15 minutes or so for the magnetron to cool down between popcorn cooking sessions.

Also, I would suggest putting a paper plate upside-down on the turntable tray, then putting the popcorn container on top of that.

This does two things: It keeps the extremely hot popcorn off the tray, reducing the chances it will crack, plus it raises the popcorn up so it will heat more efficiently.

Dacor Microwave/Conv Oven DCM24S

Placing the bag on an inverted glass bowl or pyrex casserole dish worked!!!!!  For 2 years, I have cursed my Dacor microwave for its inability to make popcorn (burns a hole in the bag, bag stays flat, almost no kernels pop, etc...)  I read the last suggestion to use the glass plate and I am now sitting with a bowl full of perfectly popped popcorn - with only 1 kernel unpopped.  The metal tray in the microwave conducts too many waves through the bag I guess.
Thanks for the solution!

Popcorn

Some microwaves specially if convection type you will need to get a microwave safe bowl turn upsidedown and place the popcorn on top of the bowl for it to pop properly.
