Whirlpool direct drive washer. Problem: water doesn't drain after wash cycle, no motor humming sounds during spin cycle. Have replace timer/timer motor, removed agitator and tub to check for obstructions. Is this pump or gear case problem, or something minor?

It's most likely a lid switch issue. Depending on your model there are a couple different varieties, but the most common one was a switch activated by a plunger on the side of the lid. See if you can see the plunger and look for the corresponding hole that it would go into on the top, and there is your lid switch. the purpose of the switch is to stop the tub from spinning when you open the lid during spin cycle. Broken switch equates to no spin or drain however even with the lid closed.
Here are some basic instructions:

Accessing this part requires you to flip up the control panel by removing two phillips head screws in either the front bottom corners (may be behind the end-cap covers), or rear bottom corners, pull panel forward and lift to disengage the tabs at the bottom. Flip the panel upwards and it will swing back out of the way.
Next you will see one wire connector going into the top of the machine, this is actually your lid switch connector, disconnect it. Now using a flat screwdriver pry the front of the two brass clips towards the rear of the washer (put tip of screwdriver into front most part of clip and press handle of screwdriver towards rear of machine). The clips should pop off the top pretty easily.
Now you can open the lid and place a hand on the front of the opening and pull the cabinet forward. The entire front and side wrapper will come off the base platform and you can set it on the floor to gain access to the lid switch that is screwed to the underside.
Good luck to you on this!

Maytag ensignia top load washer wont spin. sounds like it is trying to but the motor starts smoking and the machine will shuts off

Hello there and thank you for choosing fixya
Here is a basic on how this cycle works then i will tell you what to look at ok
The washer's motor turns one way for wash, the oppose for spin and drain. The spin function is always preceded by a drain cycle to remove all standing water from the tub and basket. When first starting in the spin/drain direction, the transmission is in 'neutral' and the motor only turns the pump. Once a set amount of time has elapsed, the timer will pause the motor long enough for the drive motor to come to a complete stop. When the timer restarts the motor again in the same (clockwise) direction, the transmission 'shifts into gear' and turns the basket. The pump is still turning in the right direction to pump water out to the drain.
So if it not spinning but it is draining
If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these: The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it. A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.) The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician. The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor. The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it. The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you

If you have a direct drive washer made by Whirlpool, your washer transmission has what is called a neutral drain built into it. It is designed to pump water out before it starts to spin. After water has drained out, the timer has a pause in it where motor shuts off for about 5 seconds. When motor comes back on, transmission is then in gear to spin. If timer never pauses, then washer never goes in gear to spin. Timer is most likely defective.

Washer won't agitate. New transmission...new timer.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Top load, direct drive Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a reversing motor.

It turns one way for agitating and reverses for draining and spinning.

It sounds as if either the motor is shot or one of the connectors is bad.

As a place to start, see the Whirlpool Service manuasl (with wiring diagrams) for their top load, direct drive washers.

I have a Kenmore top loading washer model #110 and won't agitate

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.23912100

Also see the Whirlpool (Kenmore) Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers.

The first thing I'd try is using a different cycle. If the washer works as it should, the problem points to the timer.

I'd also check to make sure that when replacing the switch, the connections to the timer haven't come loose.

Since you've replaced the Lid Switch, the motor has power for the drain and spin cycles.

These washers use a reversing motor. The motor turns one way for agitating and reverses for the drain and spin.

Since you cannot hear anything when it is supposed to be agitating, the problem does point to the timer or motor.

Not sure if manifold is leaking

Leaks water...check the pump first. The fill valve and hoses may be the next step. See how to take apart info. With the use of plastic drain hoses on many machines today, this has become a common leak trouble maker. The drain hose can rub the wall or a pipe and this will rub a hole in the drain hose.

this is a direct drive,no belts, good washer you won't find any washers built like this anymore,on top console pop off the clips on each side, then remove the two phillips screws, lift the top console, with a regular screw driver stick in into the hole where the clip goes into frame and on top of the clip and push forwards and the clip will pop out, then there's a lid switch a white wire connector on the right top, unplug it,now grab the cabinet and tilt it up and pull back and remove the cabinet.if the motor is humming and it's not draining it sounds like some thing is stuck in the pump or a bad pump, look down and you'll see the pump on the front of the motor, with a screw driver pop off the two clips and slide the pump off,get a piece of wire and stick it into the white connector where you disconnected the lid switch from, this will jump out the switch, set the timer to spin and run it,if the motor spins then you know the pump is jammed or bad.let me know what you find.the pump part is WP3363394

No belt on your machine. Sounds like motor coupler that joins motor and transmission is broken. Very inexpensive part but a few steps involved in getting machine disassembled Look up YouTube video on replacing motor coupler on Whirlpool washer.
