If you have a windows xp CD you could try a repair installation. Start to install windows, and when it checks for previous versions it may give you the option to repair. this will look like a fresh install but your files will still be intact.
If the repair option is not there, you will need to format the HD and start from sctratch

When i boot up my laptop i am getting the error message, "operating system not found." Can you please give me advice on what to do to fix my laptop? Toshiba laptop and im scared i may lose the things

Your hard drive is missing from the system. Or, just does not recognize it. The obvious - Remove any USB devices like drives and any media from disc player. Its trying to load, but can't find bootable hard drive, CD, or USB... Remove the hard drive and reseat (reconnect). Check BIOS by pressing an F key during boot. Look on the screen for correct Function key. Might be F2 key. Verify BIOS recognizes the drive. It must be listed! There is no going forward if it's not. Check boot order and make internal hard drive first. Save and restart.

Toshiba L310 BIOS freezing

Reload the operating system. The bios does not freeze, the operating system freezes.

You might have a virus causing it to freeze. Run a virus scan then if that don't solve the problem, reload the operating system.

Will not boot up. checks file NTFS volume label S3A6261D001 quotes unspecified error occurred

You could spend a long time diagnosing troubles, but I would simply reload the operating system, using the manufacture-supplied software. If you have a hardware problem, the new operating system either won't load or won't run when your finished.

Please try changing the HDD. If same thing happens the problem may be with ur O/s Cd or the Mother board
Please let me know this is used machine or New one. If new one please take a different O/S cd and install it.

If you are installing XP and your HDD is SATA then you need sata drivers.
