Canon PIXMAMP510 gives grating sound after replacing ink tank

I have a three-year old PIXMAMP510. It has been one of the best printers I have had.
Today I replaced the Black ink tank with the correct Canon ink for the MP510. I have done this many times before. The print head holder moved out of sight as usual.

When the printer was turned on there was an 'error code' in the printer read out.

I followed the troubleshooting guide in the printer hand book by unplugging the printer waiting a few minutes and then restarting.

There was a harsh grating sound and the 'error code' was displayed again.

It sounds as though the new ink cartridge may have been inserted incorrectly but the print head holder is out of sight and will not return to the left when the scanning unit is raised.

Can you please help.

Please let me know the "error Code" number shown on the printer's display, we need to troubleshoot your problem referring with the error code shown.

While you are preparing to reply, please turn off the printer, disconnect the usb cable and the power cord, leave it for few minutes and again reconnect the power cord and power on the printer. Now lift up the scanning unit and see if the cartridge' carriage is moving or not, also assure that there's no obstruction on the movement.

Awaiting for your quick response so that I can give immediate assistance to you.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

    Hi Nonotech,

I tried your suggestion about disconnecting the USB cable and power chord. When restarting the same grating sound ocurred and the 'error # was 5100

Could I have done something wrong when I replaced the ink tank ?

Thanks for your help so far.

Thanks for the info, the error code is true about your problem, (error code 5100 means carriage problem). It's possible that the ink tank had replaced has jumped off from it's place, obstructing the movement of the cartridge mechanism, which makes the carriage to stop moving.

The only solution is with you or you can call a friend who has a little idea about the movement of the carriage. Try your best to pull back the carriage towards the left, so it carefully or if you fee that something will be broken, take a flash light and look inside the passage, perhaps, the object which is obstructing the unit is stuck on the left hand side of the carriage.

If you can't pull it back, then push it towards the right using a screwdriver or other similar object which you can use, (please do it slowly, with lesser stress, you may damage the print head). It should at least move one way, either left or right. In case, the object that's obstructing the unit is broken, it'd be tough, but you can clear it after taking the machine apart.

I would suggest you to take it to a service center or an electronic repairing shop (if you know what you are doing with it, go ahead, never mind, but if you are not sure, how to open or how to reassemble, i wouldn't recommend).

    I wish you good luck.

    Thanks for using FixYa.

It seems to me that the belt that move the printer cartridge left and right is stuck and might be damage, but before you can tell this, you will need to disassemble the printer to have access to the belt to see if is worn out because when cartridge are stuck like that, it most likely the belt is worn out, check to see the belt, if defective, replace to fix the problem with you printer.

Take care.

Hi, My Canon MP210 printer is displaying E3 code. The colour light and alarm lights are illuminated constantly and black one is flashing. When opening the "lid", the cartridges do not align to...

I have workaround for the empty tank issue:
- buy or borrow another not empty tank
- place it in
- start the printer
- it recognises the "new" tank
- turn off the printer
- put back the old, empty, but refilled tank
- turn on the printer
- print something
- it will pop up a dialogue window saying
"The ink level of the black/color tank cannot be
determined. The ink level determining function will be
disabled for the black/color tank.
If you want to continue printing without this function
press the Start button on the printer."
- Press the Start button on the printer and ignore the
button 'Cancel Printing' appearing on the dialogue window.
- The dialog window disappears.

You can print your refilled tank as many times you want from this time.

When you go to 'Printers /Canon /Properties /Maintenance / Printer Status / Ink Information' it says that the ink level measuring function has been disabled for: black [40] / color[41]. You can ignore this this message, the printer will work perfectly without this stupid function.

How do you gain access to the "used ink tank" on the Canon i560?

Well Fay after much research, the best answers I've seen actually came from other experts on this website. The link below will take you to another Fixya page with several, very good solutions to the same problem you have. My personal favorite was soaking up waste ink from the pad with kleenex or some other absorbent material as you won't need to take apart your machine. You merely remove the ink cartridges and carriage to gain access to the pad/sponge that Canon calls it's waste tank. I do wish you well and hope you come back to let me know if you were able to fix your machine.

The waste ink tank is full. Where is it located?

This is something that needs to be done by a service department..... however it may not be full. Cannon has a 3 year clock on these so you may be able to clear the error code and continue printing.

Waste Error Reset
1: Power off printer
2: Hold Resume button then press and hold POWER, the beeper will sound once.
3: Hold POWER and release RESUME
4: Press RESUME twice
5: When the indicator lights steady, press RESUME three(3) times. The indicator should be orange.
6: Press Power to set data

Have a 1 year old Pro9000 thats starting to give

Use a Q-tip and a little water to wipe the wiper assembly on the right side of your machine. Unplug the printer when the carts are in the middle and look to the right with a flashlight. The wipers are supposed to wipe excess ink from the bottom of the printhead.

MP500 ink tank cannot be recognized error U043

I had the same problem. My mp630 is also only 4 months old. I replaced all colour ink cartrdiges(inc black), but was only able to release the function for detecting the ink levels for magenta and cyan. Yellow and black then started giving error message U043, with them alternating between working, but never working at the same time. Getting them all clicked in with the lights glowing red does not solve the problem, as once the printer cover is closed, the same error message turns up. The only thing that worked for me is moving the chip slightly out of alignment, by pushing the sliding chip holder, and I only had to do this twice before they all started working and the printer was unlocked.

Ink cartridge problem

Solution: Snap in ink tanks properly MP500

Ink Tank Seated Properly Refer to the following steps to verify the ink tanks are seated correctly:
  1. Confirm that the printer is powered on and press the Open button. (The paper output tray will open.)

  2. Lift the scanning unit (printer cover) completely. (The print head will move to the replacement position.)

  3. Open the inner cover.

    a. Do not try to manually move or stop the Print Head Holder.
    b. Do not touch any metal parts.

  4. Press down on the ink tank until a click is heard, thereby making sure the ink tank is seated properly.

Make sure that the ink tank is inserted in the slot that corresponds to the ink tank's color.

  5. Ensure that all the ink tanks are installed properly and the ink tank lamps light red.

    Ink Tank Lamp
You can check the status of each ink tank according to the way its lamp flashes.
    • - On: The printer is ready to print.
    • - Slow flashing (at about three second interval): Ink is low. Prepare a new ink tank.
    • - Fast flashing (at about one second interval): Ink tank is empty, or the printer is not ready due to an error.
    • - Off: An error has occurred and the printer is not ready to print.
  6. Close the inner cover and the scanning unit (printer cover).

    1. When closing the scanning unit (printer cover), be careful not to jam your finger.
    2. When starting printing next time, the print head cleaning launches automatically.

Service error 5C00

Service error 5C00 might indicate the purge system.

The "rattling sound " is probably coming from the (gears of-) socalled purge unit. May be one ( or both) of the ink tanks is not properly put back in again,or the printhead-lock is not locked. and the purge system is blocked.

Remove the ink tanks and remove the printhead, closw the printhead-lock, close the printhead cover, switch the printer of, switch the printer on again. If the rattling sound is still there, than you might have an expensive problem to be solved.
If the rattling sound is gone, there is probably something wrong with the printheadlock.
