Hello,
Sounds like a possible tension spring on the latch has broke, or fallen off, the latch is on the side of the tape compartment, looks like a small hook and is locks around a pin if the spring is broke or the pin has gotten bent, that is your problem.

I have a model similar to this one. Best bet is to copy tapes to CD and buy a newer one which is what I am going to do soon.
Also Vista doesn't even work with these, just xp.

What I started to do was to download them to my pc that has xp , put it in a folder and copy it to a cd or dvd.
An easier way, which is what I am doing now when I get spare time is to plug the camera directly into my DVD recorder with the cables provided and just hit record and leave it to do the whole tape.
Sooner or later these tapes will self destruct just like VCR tapes.

Did this help you at all? I forgot you can't get the tapes in or out. Very hard to keep up with technology, sometimes hanging onto old equip too long like I sometimes do, doesn't work. Planned to be obsolete before you even take them home.

SOURCE: "reinsert the cassettee" error in Sony HandyCam CCD-TRV 438E.

The camcorder most likely is not detecting the tape, you have a bad sensor and these sensors all come on a flex type board and the flex board is mounted on the chassis surface. This will mean that the entire mechanism will meed to be diassembled, and is a very big and costly job. My opinion is that this repair will run you abut 250 to 300 bucks and this camcorder is not worth this as new camcorders are under 200 bucks. Good Luck

SOURCE: tape door wont close

I'm having a similar problem. The camera is a Sony DCR-TRV280. When you put a tape in the tray will not go down. However when the tray is empty and you push it shut it will go down. In other words the mechanism works fine without the tape but with the tape it doesn't. I hope the explanation is clear enough. Thanks

CCD TRV 87 Camera eats tapes. Any thoughts or suggestions?

This can be caused by several problems including the transmission gear in the tape mechanism not engaging properly or a defective clutch in the take-up spool and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it’s not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

Viewing SONY 8mm Tapes -- Please help

The older tapes were shot on a 8mm camcorder and the camcorder you have wil not play them becasue it doesn't have backwards compatability with the older format. The tapes you recorded are on a digital 8 camcorderr and it is different encoding than the one you recorded the other 60 tapes with. You will need to find either a dcr-trv 350 trv 530 trv 730 ect as these have the ability to play all the tapes.
Or find an older 8mm camcorder to play your tapes with.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Al

Sony Handycam DCR-TRV330 Digital-8 won't calibrate tapes to be able to view

hi there. i just actually had this problem right now. and heres how i fixed it :) it had the error so i took out the tape left it ejected for about 5 seconds. then put the tape back. it read for a little then errored again so it was close. next what i did is plugged the camera in (last time this error happened i plugged in the power and it fixed it) still no fix so i took off the battery waited 5 seconds then put it back on. after that i ejected the tape again and re put it in and it worked! you could try anyone of those things. and usually they work for me. maybe it has something to do with the cameras being old.
