My system used to play AVI videos. I think I used Windows media player. Now, all it does is act like an audio player ... good audio, no video. What can I do?

The issue you're describing sounds more like missing codecs

In order to play certain kinds of media on certain players you need to have the right codecs. If you want to use Windows Media Player or Winamp to view movies there is an amazing "codec pack" available to download that will enable you to play just about any format.

The pack I'm referring to is called the "K-lite codec pack" and can be downloaded here:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

There's a bunch of good info there if you're interested in exactly what you're getting.

Personally I prefer a program called VLC. "VLC Media Player" works a whole lot nicer "out of the box" than media player, and doesn't require a codec pack to playback just about any movie file you throw at it. I adore this program and can't recommend it over Windows Media Player enough. It's widely regarded as the best free media player available and can be downloaded here:

I think you may get the wrong format for your coby player.
As i know it can play avi videos, soyou need to convert videos to AVI first.
For doing that, you can use a AVI video converter.
That is really easy.and free to download.

File won't play video

The reason that the video is not playing is because the video uses certain "codecs" to decode the video. (It is basically a way that the computer interprets how to display the video on your screen.)

You need to install a good codec pack so that you can play all formats of video and/or audio.

I recommend using K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. It plays everything from Windows Media (AVI) to Quicktime files and just about everything in between. This is a very widely-used and popular codec pack. It also comes with a much simpler version of Windows Media Player. (It shows as an older version...and even looks like an older version, but it is only based on the older version as it honestly worked much better than newer versions.)

Here is the link.

(Click HERE to download the codec pack.)

Just use the DEFAULT installation. Don't change anything. There is no need to. Once it is installed, it will use the version of Windows Media Player that I just mentioned by default.

But if you still wish to use version of Windows Media Player that you currently have installed, then you may feel free to do so. It will still play videos using the same codecs that were installed by K-Lite. (All A/V programs will use the codecs.)

Another player I have recently found is GomPlayer. Very nice interface. Clean and easy to use. Install K-Lite and try out GomPlayer if you like afterwards.

HERE is a link. According to the site, you may not have to install any other codec packs after installing GOMPlayer. That may or may not be true. It IS OK if you install both.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes. :)

Avi file

Please down load and install the latest version of media player for your version of windows. or you can download and install winamp with its video plugin which will play .AVI file easily. Also make sure that you have installed correct display driver for your hardware. Normally no video codec is required to play original .AVI file. I think you may have a DV video fire (.AVI) file. This will play if install the DV video codec. Media player classic will play most of the formats.
