Maytag fav6800aww washer (transmission) problems

My maytag fav6800aww washer wouldnt spin the water out of tub and would bang around giving a out of balance code uc I think. I readjust the load and no luck. If you do a quick load with no clothes works fine, thats how I got the water out. I looked around online and did research and decided that the clutch was bad so I replaced it and the struts around the tub. All looked well but when the motor switched directions it locked up and started squeeling real loud and the belt was going around clutch but clutch didnt move. I stopped the washer and looked around but didn't see nothing else wrong. Tried again and the same thing. Called maytag and they recommended a local company, he came and looked at it and said it was the transmission but dont like to work on this model. I paid him and sent on his way. I downloaded the maintenance manual and dissasembled the washer and removed the transmission. The transmission seems to work fine but I cant find any info on how it is suppose to work. I found some coins in the area making me wonder if they had something to do with the problem . Maybe locking the tub or transmission. That is the problem. Now I am going to change the seals around the transmission and order another but the coins are making me wonder if they are the problem and not the transmission. The washer is 4 years old and maybe I should change it since it's apart. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated

“”All looked well but when the motor switched directions it locked up and started squeeling real loud and the belt was going around clutch but clutch didnt move.“”
Was this during the water fill cycle the machine? The Control Board will signal the Motor Controller to spin Motor/wash basket 50RPM in the CCW direction during water fill of the Cycle selected. This is the Spin direction of the wash basket during all spin cycles. If you can observe with the front cover off. Don’t raise the washer top from the base to far or you will spray water around the machine.

You can empty the wash tub with excess water by going into Service Mode and turning on the Drain Pump;
I would go to page 16 of the SM lower right hand part of page, Board Output Test and turn on the drain pump in service mode to pump out the tub.

Enter Service Mode by simultaneously pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

Pressing the Delicates key will lock the lid. Now press the Presoak key the drain pump will turn on. Stop with off button or hit the Presoak key.

What are the 1st two digits of your Serial Number that is your series number found here;

Did your old clutch pulley use the Upper One-Way Roller Clutches bearing ring?

With the belt off the can you rotate the Clutch Pulley by hand CW direction the Wash/Agitate direction tumblers will turn. Then rotate the Clutch Pulley in the CCW direction the Spin Cycle direction. After the Clutch Pulley is rotated a few turns the Large Wrap spring in the Clutch Pulley will come under tension and the Wash Basket will rotate CCW. Someone will have to verify that for you while you are on your knees.

I'm wondering if you have the Clutch Pulley seated properly. Sorry you wasted money on the Front Struts. Did you follow my Clutch Fix post for the Clutch maintenance/replacement?

Let’s start there and try to determine if the Clutch Pulley will turn both directions by hand. If it won’t I would reseat the Clutch Pulley and try again.

See my Clutch Fix post for reseating the Clutch Pulley and the SM on page 47. Note the 1/16-1/8" gap between the Pulley face and shaft end.

The coins are normal for us folks that don’t check pockets….:)

It’s difficult to rotate by hand the pinion gears of the tranny that drive the tumblers. I have not seen any transmission lock up to date but that is possible.

Let me know if I can help. I know you have the SM the parts view is handyif you don have Sears Parts Direct

Also how much rust on the old Clutch Pulley? You may have a slight tub seal leak and I can help you with that.

    Just wondering what ever happened?

    Was the wash basket rotating CW in wash/agitate cycle id so i suspect the spinner support bearings may be froze/rusted up. Do you still have the machine?

Continuous Unbalanced Circuit. Improper signal from Tub Displacement Sensor.
Wet Clothes • Very small clothes loads can cause unbalanced loads - add additional towels. • Excessive suds may have been present. • Check Tub Displacement Sensor connection and main harness connector at machine control board. • Check Tub Displacement Sensor for 0 to 3.0 Volts DC output voltage between ground and the board input. Check for 12 Volts DC input voltage between the ground and the board output. Only check for voltage at the Tub Displacement Sensor. Do not perform a continuity check. See Tub Displacement Diagnostics • Excessive motion was detected in spin Run Quick Spin Test with an empty tub to check Tub Displacement Sensor and machine control board. • Check for restricted drain system.

SOURCE: uC code on my Maytag Neptune Washer FAV6800WW

I would not rush out and buy a Motor Controller just yet. I can’t see any technical reason that would link the Motor Controller to dc/UC error codes related to unbalance condition you experiencing but I could be out in left field. Can you elaborate on your clutch work? New clutch assembly installed ie new clutch pulley, what I call the Spinner Shaft coupler as seen in my clutch repair/replacement post. Did you replace the upper oneway roller clutch bearing if used and the clutch pulley mounted oneway roller clutch bearing? I assume the wash tub is banging around before throwing the UC or dc error can you let me know If you are not throwing dc/UC errors associated with large tub swings? Could you lift the top of the washer and with an empty wash basket start a Spin Only cycle and watch the tumblers closely at the start of the spin cycle. The tumblers should rotate a very small amount as the large wrap spring comes under tension in the clutch pulley with the CCW spin rotation of the wash basket. Those tumblers should not rotate more than 1/8 of a turn as the wash basket starts the spin cycle with CCW rotation. Can you verify the tumbler rotation action for me as spin cycle starts?
Did you check the Tub Displacement Sensor? It’s in the Service Manual. If you haven’t can you give this a quick check?
3.0 Tub Displacement Sensor Diagnostics check.

It is possible the Tub Displacement Sensor may have failed try this check which is in the Troubleshooting guide stored in your washer console or refer to the SM.

3a. Enter the Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

3b. Press the Super Wash key display reads “in”…something like that.

3c. Press Delicates the Display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

3d. Push tub to the back right corner of the machine the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

3e. Press Hand Wash.

3f. Pull tub to the front left corner while pushing the tub down the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). If you get these results your Tub Displacement sensor should be OK and I believe it’s not the component failure producing dc/UC errors in spin cycle. I would remove the clutch for inspection and re-lube. There is a more technical troubleshooting method to check Tub Displacement Sensor in the Troubleshooting guide and Service manual.

Let me know if I can help. Rich

SOURCE: My Magtag FAV6800aww runs for

My first suggestion is go to a true DIY forum and submit your question. I moved/post on a couple of real good DIY forums. I look back here once in awhile to help owners that are having issues that I feel they can DIY.

I can't find most of my repair post in this forum. This forum to me is a "Call In a repair tech forum" for this model and that is OK if you can't do basic DIY repairs.

I don't want to put in a direct link to the washer repair forum of my choice so put in your browser this phrase;

Appliance Repair Forums > Appliance Repair Talk > Washers > Maytag/Magic Chef/Admiral/Jenn-Air

This is a true DIY Appliance repair forum.

In the Sticky: Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW 5 post down you will find a link to the Service Manual. I also have repair post in that sticky to help with the most common issues with the machine.

1. Did you do the work or a repair service?

2. Did you re-lube the One-Way Roller clutches needle bearing in your new clutch? I recommend clean with WD-40 and re-lube with Slick 50 One-Lube.

3. You may have a Leaky Tub seal and it may be time to do an Outer Tub rebuild.

Google this; ""FAV6800A/FAV9800A Outer Tub bearing replacement"" and read the process this is another real good DIY forum.

If you replaced the clutch you are more than qualified to rebuild the Outer Tub. Cost are in the ball park of $60

I sounds like this is a common problem with the Maytag Neptune TL after about 3-5 years. Mine finally went out yesterday after several months of bearings getting louder all of the time. the water issue, you probably have a trickle leak through the cold water valve
the mixing valve is quite an easy repair, but I would have to say with all honesty, it probably time for a new machine
the hub seal is a tub replacment call
2 hrs of labor if hes good
and the tub runs around 500.00 dollars
