Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

Error 99 keeps coming up on my 400D mainly when i am using the cam pre sets why?

No there isn't Ian. What lens are you using just out of curiosity? There have been the odd issue with Tamron lenses causing error 99s constantly. Check your firmware just to be on the safeside - and keep it up to date if you can. Firmware is designed to iron out little kinks such as errors and other anomalies.

Error 99 with a Canon 300D (original rebel) and Tamron XR Di II 18 to 200 mm lens. Occurs when lens is zoomed out. Does not happen with other lenses (Canon 18-55 kit, Canon 75-300). Cleaning contacts on...

Welcome to Fixya
Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....

Here's what you can try:
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Canon, wont focus, dark viewfinder

try cleaning the contacts on the bottom of the lens, where it mounts to the camera body. This is a simple step to take and one that I try to remember to do frequently when I am switching back and forth between lenses frequently. get a magnifing glass and look closely at the contacts on both the lens and body. I have 5 canon bodies and the 75-300 IS lens is one of my favorites. It is ALWAYS mounted on either an XTI or XSI and within arms reach at all times. I have a hook and hang it from the headrest of the passenger seat when driving so that it is always ready at a moments notice. I have never had a problem with that lens.

I have a Cannon Rebel XTI and i keep getting err 99

Make sure your firmware is up to date. The current version is 1.09 which did address a problem with live view that could cause error 99.
Here's the link http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eosdigital4/firmware.html

Also try removing your lens and putting it back on. Sometimes it is a bad connections between the body and lens that can cause this error.

Will not autofocus

Hey shutterbug72,
According to the manufacturer the first thing you should try is cleaning the lens contacts with an eraser. If that doesn't work you could try removing the battery and reinserting it to reset the camera. It seems to me that if there was a compatibility issue going on you should have seen that from the start. As far as what lens you should buy both Tamron and Canon make very good lenses, but with Canon lenses you shouldn't ever have compatibility issues. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

Tamron lens for Xti?

if it is an auto focus lens that works on one eos camera, it should work on almost all of them. the only known exception is that some high end extenders will not fit the eos1dmarkII as it protrudes into the opening too far.
but a good rule is that if it fits without any obstruction issues, it should work. try cleaning contacts on the lens and camera body. if that doesn't fix it, talk to Tamron. you can use it manually, but will not be as easy and you would get less predictable results.

my suggestion is to always go with lens from camera maker.

sounds like there is an issue with the tamron lens. not the camera.
good luck
