Question about Refrigerators

3 Answers

My maytag side by side model mzd2752gr is leaking water on the floor from the freezer. This model does not have a drain pan. I am sure the drain port in the back of the freezer is not draining, but could it be a problem with the evaporator system that using compressed air to blow through the drain port may cause damage somewhere. One week ago, I replaced the defrost timer and defrost thermostat/heating element due to the freezer freezing up and the refrigerator not cooling. This water leaking problem was there before the cooling problem occured. A schematic of the drain/evaporator system would also help me. I am having trouble finding it on line. Thank you, Jeff.

Are you sure the drain port isn't frozen over and thus not allowing water out?

If it is, you simply have to defrost it and if that doesn't work then clearing these plugs can be tricky and sometimes requires the application of a carefully selected African Engineering Technology (AET). I’ll share some of the AETs that I’ve found to be most helpful.

First thing to do is gain access to the condensate drip cup. On your Whirlpool-built fridge, it looks like this. As you can see, the cup itself pulls right out. Sometimes you’ll find ice built up in there, sometimes dark grey slimy gookus that moves if you poke it…scary stuff! Either way, clean the drip cup out in the sink.

Then, you may need to clear the drain tube that the drip cup plugs into. If there’s ice in there, you may be able to carefully poke through it using a chop stick or thin blade screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the tube. If it’s just more gookus built up in there, I like to use a length of 1/4′ nylon tubing to push it through and then flush with hot water.

On some refrigerators, you can’t remove the drip cup in order to clear an extensive ice plug. What’s a grasshopper to do? Just add salt! Works great on the icy winter roads up here in yankee land and it does a good job at melting ice plugs in refrigerator condensate drain tubes, too. Argh!

Please let me know if you need any further help and I would be glad to do what I can.

Thank you for using Fixya and Good Luck.

My Maytag MZD2766GES is leaking water to the bottom of my freezer, which, when it get alot starts leaking all over the floor. where is this coming from?

Hello,

The water is from the melted frost of the defrost cycle. The drain at the bottom of the back wall of the freezer is blocked so instead of the water draining into the pan where it will evaperate,it's pooling on the freezer floor and freezing, in many case when the floor indent is full the water will leak onto the floor.By pulling the refrigerator out from the wall, there will be a tube behind the service panel on the right side when looking at it from the rear, that tube can be removed and cleared, then clear the nozzle it connects to inside the freezer.

I hope this helps you to stop the leak,
Gene

I have a Maytag Refrigerator mzd2752gr and it leaking water inside freezer compartment. Water then freezes and collects at the bottom of the freezer. When the ice starts to melt it drips out at the bottom...

First thing is to remove the ice from the freezer floor. After that rermove the lovxer basket and directly behind that you will see more ice below the freezer back wall. The problem you have is a cogged drain line. Remove the remaining ice there and located the drain hole, which is normally located in the center of the trough you see. On some models you may have to remove the back wall as well to get to it. After located the drain hole, thaw it out using hot water, a hair dryer, or carefully using a screw driver to tap into it to remove the ice blockage. Once you can freely pour water down the drain hole, you'll be good to go.

Water leaking and freezing at bottom of freezer in side by side Maytag model # msd2454gr refridgerator.

Clean the drain pan and drain line in the back of the freezer section underneath the evaporator coil. (hint: use turkey baster with hot water) Make sure water drains when you pour it in. If it doesn't - also clean drain tube on the back of the unit behind the cover. When done - put the tube exactly where it was.
Good luck! :)

My Maytag side-by-side refrigerator/freezer Leak

There is a pan and drain hose under the freezer coil that is there to catch any water when the freezer goes into defrost. I feel strongly that is where you will find your leak.
I hope this helps.

I have Maytag refrigerator model MZD2752GR. Water leak from under the refrigerator for about 5 min a few times every day. What is the solution to this problem?

There is no one solution to this. It come from a variety of ways. For example a crack in the defrost condensate pan. Or a leak in a water supply line. The way you described it is almost on a cycle basis so I believe it is more of the leaking condensate problem. I would like you to look inside the freezer and fresh food section bottom near crisper and look for condensate buildup inside these areas condensate in freezer would appear as too much frost on items in freezer and fresh food compartment like moisture collecting on walls and shelves. Do that and let me know what you see. Pull front kick plate in front off and pull away from wall. Remove rear cover on compressor area. I will return soon, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Freezer is leaking and also makea buzzing noice

Hissing and popping is normal, it is the defrost heater.
Check that the freezer is level
Check the drain pan
Check the condenser fan
Check the evaporator fan
Inspect the compressor mounts

Water on floor outside of freezer?

* Check the drain pan
* If you have an ice-maker, check the water supply hose going into and coming out of the water inlet valve

Water inside the freezer?

* Check for a clogged drain tube
* If you have an ice-maker, check freezer and ice-maker for level

Maytag Side By Side Problem

Check and make sure the drain pan under the refrigerator is in position and the drain hose is in the pan. If it misses the pan it will put water on the floor.

Water Leak

Sounds like you have a plugged drain line remove thwe bottom drawer and look in the pan see if the little drain hole is frozen over if so use a hair dryer to unthaw and pour a glass of hot water down to make sure it is clear it will go into the pan under the unit if it still wont run free use a Turkey baster to blow out the drain line as something is stuck in it

Ice and water on bottom of freezer

sjlobo, sounds like your defrost drain pan is frozen over or has some gunk in it. When the unit goes into defrost the water is running onto the freezer floor and out the front. Remove the lower bin and check the drain hole. You may have to remove the freezer back panel. If you can, just use some very hot water and some sort of baster to unfreeze the drain. Check this first, Catriver..post back.
