SOURCE: laptop boots to the F10 and F12

this is as if you haven't got an installed operating system and requires it to be installed, but you have to enable your cdrom as the first boot device. Put your O.S disc in and reboot; then press enter to boot up from disc.

SOURCE: my compaq evo nc620c laptop wont boot up, only

Without having seen it, it sounds like a hard drive problem. Could be dead, could be the boot info has been destroyed (virus?).

ROM setup should be able to tell you more about the hard drive, and whether Setup can see it.

My compaq evo nc620c laptop wont boot up, only goes to the "compaq" log screen from where I can go into F10 rom based setup or F12 network boot only.

I have suceeded by pressing Fn Button + Escape while booting. When it starts beeping, keep the Fn-Button pressed and try F1 / F2 / F3 etc. till the screen changes and it starts booting normally. No idea why, but it worked. Good luck!

Trying to fix this kind of notebook, seems that it won't boot, gets stuck in the first screen where the manufacturer logo is showing that it's F10 based rom, Tried to boot from athe cd drive , but ther's...

in the setup utility, make sure the boot sequence is set to check the cd drive and then the hard drive in that order. hit f10 to save your settings and reboot. if your hd section is grayed out, then the system isn't seeing the hdd and it's probably bad.

When I turn on the laptop sometimes the screen doesn't come up and when it does come up it says F10=ROM Based Setup. When I press F10 nothing happens.

Sounds like the hard disk is not able to boot the laptop.
ROM based setup means you need to reset or reconfigure the BIOS.
Assuming the BIOS battery is OK.
This could be because the hard disk itself died, you can remove the disk and attach it to a USB adapter (cheap to purchase) then connect it to another PC. If you can read the disk OK in another PC then you have a motherboard problem.

Bios update killed my machine

you disable shadow and caching in bios at boot ...
at startup you need to hit f10 (modeels may vary)to enter setup(bios)
in bios make required changes save and exit.
